We are new to this combat thing. I need to know what "types" of helmets or hard hats the AMA requires. Are there special brands, thickness etc? (MORE rules!!) [
] I looked all over the AMA site for the answer. There are so many pages and rules ......... the answer I am looking for is hiding in all that type somewhere!!

Looks like any industry standard construction worker hard hat will do, they even make one in the shape of a cowboy hat. My question is, what difference does the little bullet shaped spinner nut make VS a standard prop nut? Closed casket or open casket funeral?

PS. I see the guys wearing those hard hats in pictures........ but I would like to see the AMA's rule for head gear, in print, that in one section they mention causualy. They say it is in "XYZ area". XYZ is what I could not find. Why do they make so many rules that you can't even find them?[

for combat the helmets are not specifically spelled out so it's best to do something than nothing at all or worse yet is to ask and make them define it. Bicycle helmets or any hard shell helmet, even batting helmets are excepable at AMA sanctioned meets.
FWIW, Pylon has it spelled out to be an OSHA approved hard hat, YET if you view the pictures of the NATS pylon in this months recent Model Aviation, you can clearly see bicycle helmets being worn by top competitors. HMMMmmmm................

I've seen guys use pretty much anything. Including using "bump caps" that fit inside a typical baseball cap. Constructions helmets are most common, followed by bicycle or other sporting goods and military helmets.
If you just need something to meet the rules, the cheapest construction hardhat you can get at your local hardware store is fine. If you actually want to protect yourself, I actually think something like a hocky helmet is best, as it's designed to take a hard hit from the side or rear, where construction helmets do nothing for a sideways hit, the're designed to stop falling objects only.

I don't know where you can pick them up but I've seen the type that meatcutters wear and they are very light and would probably fit the bill also. Not OSHA or ANSI approved though but who's checking.
