Jeff + Nony,
There's a SPAD combat group of us flying out at Ridge Flyers in Delta. We should arrange a full-on day of carnage some time soon! Some of us are new to combat and others have been at it a while. Got directions to the Bellingham field?
Nony, where do you fly?
(just had a look at your gallery, is that you Wayne/Mike?)
Kelly
PS.on another note Jeff, is your field 'turbine friendly'?

Kelly,
Directions to our field: From I-5 heading South: Take the Slater road exit and head west from the stop sign (turn right) (not sure of the exit #, but it is the Lummi Indian reservation and casino exit.) continue to the stop light (about 3 miles?) turn left on Haxton Way. (Texaco and the Casino will be on your left). take the first right that you come to (N. Red River road) and it will wind along the river (slough?) for about a mile. take the first left over the little bridge and again the first left immediately after the bridge. you will be backtracking now, but our field is only a couple of tenths of a mile on the right. As far as being turbine friendly, we have a 200' x 20' paved runway and a 500' x 80' grass strip. we had a pretty hot turbine out for our big bird earlier this year and have one member in the process of finishing a Top Cat. He is thinking that it will be ready for taxi testing this weekend. He is going to fly it the first couple of times at the Whidbey Island field (3000' Navy runway!) but he thinks it should be no problem to fly at our field once he has a good feel for the turbine. Would love to have ya down for som carnage!!!! We have a few Canadian members that say it is only about an hour to our field (depending on border traffic) and the facilities are so nice that they prefer to fly down here. I think we would probably have to prearrange a weekend combat meet as we have to let the other 100 members know that the field will be filled up w/ Gremlins and Spads, but get some guys together and lets plan it!!! otherwise come on down on Thursday nites and lets mix it up!!!!

Sounds great Jeff,
I will talk to the guys and see if we can arrange a Thursday evening trip some time soon. A combat meet sounds great. You can count at least 3 of us in on that one...
As for Jets, I have a Hotspot with a TJT-3000 on it (max 27.5lb thrust). It has yet to fly but it should have a number of runs in by the Whidbey meet.
I plan to run it out of RCFCBC's 700ft grass strip in Surrey. We performed a jet and combat demo at their big bird event last weekend. We started doing head-on's with the SPAD's after the streamers were gone/crashed! sadly no one connected...
Later,
Kelly

Hey Kelly, Im who's got the TopCat, Once I am used to mine Ill be flying it out there, Id like to check out your engine there, AND, I will be at whidbey too
On another note, are there any long jet fields near the border or not far away? Whidbey is a couple hours away, like to find a closer alternative for some fun.
Thanks

Hey John, had a feeling it was you.
Kinda funny being at both extreme ends of the hobby... From at $10,000 jet that goes down if a single screw comes loose --> a $12 piece of crap that can even fly after a mid-air!
(we have proven that last one a few times)
The only local paved strips I know of are Whidbey and Princeton. I've also heard that Vernon has a 1200 grass strip that is cut like a golf green. Princeton is about 3.5 hrs from here and Vernon is about 4.5. The local field I am at only has ~350ft, which is about the lower limit for jets. I would say RCFCBC's 700ft strip is probably going to be the best around now that they have replanted it. That's all I can think of.
RCFCBC had their first taste of combat a few weeks ago, hopefully spawning a new batch of competitors.
As soon as the TJT-3000 is AMA approved I'll bring it down for a go. The documentation is bogging me down a bit but I am working on the final application now. Tom and I are working together on this stuff...
(sorry for getting off topic

We are trying to start a Thursday night group ourselves. Right now there only about 7 or 8 regulars but we hope to grow that # pretty quick. Some friends and I have been at it a while now, even with Goldberg chipmunks for a while!
I still have mine, but holy cow this 13 year old bird almost bought it a few times!
You couldn't imagine the excitement when we found the SPAD plans on the net! A week later we had them in full production and already had 3 mid-airs. I have 3 other guys real interested in coming down maybe next week or the week after. We all have some sort of the SPAD 'Debut' or similar. One of the guys even made a coro piper cub for us to trash on! It looks and flies like a piece of airborne debris.
We don't fly with helmets in Canada but I'm sure we can scrounge something up.
We will watch the weather in the next couple weeks and giver a go if the conditions are right.

Kelly

sounds good, Kelly! We don't wear helmets as we are flying out a ways from the pilot stations as our field permits this. That was one comment I heard from the guys that saw you fly during your big bird was that you were flying quite a bit closer than we do, but I am sure you will be able to adjust! I will post a couple of carnage pics of our Gremlins!!
Hope to see ya soon!
Jeff
