Im selling my Funbat that I never flew and Im interested in getting into Scale combat. Ive read many articles on it and I notice everyone always brings 2 or more identicle planes to competitions.
Im guesing this is because of Mid airs and what not. Anyway, How much am I looking to spend for entry level scale competition?
Also what special things might I need other then regular RC type supplies.
PS If any of you guys are interested in a Funbat with a MVVS .21 on it Click here
Thanks,
Gregg

Not trying to talk you out of scale but have you looked at "open B" or "open C" yet?
It's a lot easier to find others to fly it with you. (Open B is the most popular)

We started with open but are now addicted to 1/12 scale with MiG's. I have 3, and I think others are building like mad cuz they are so much fun and great performers.....Mine are 3 LB even and scream with 25 nitro in an fx 25 with 9x5 prop.

For rather inexpensive ( $35 or so) good flying planes, you could do alot worse than one of the JKAerotech line ( do I sound like a commercial?)http://www.jkaerotech.com/. I have the Mig 3 and the Corsair and both built easily, fly well, and are durable.
JESTER
Oh yeah, the Mig weighs about 2 lb 2 Oz and with a Norvel with stock muffler it goes like... the wind

Most guys are building foamies for scale combat. These are the JKA type airplanes. They are not necessarily JKA's but are built similarly. Most flyers in scale class are using FG rods to strenthen the fuses and wings on the foamies to make them survivable. Then covering them with nylon material and water based polyurethane. Others are buying FG fuse planes with foam wings from either waverc.com or Warbirds LTD these are more durable than most scale planes. DO NOT..... I mean DO NOT go and buy a balsa scale plane and spend numerous hours to make a beautiful scale craft. It will only last you minutes in scale competion and you will get discouraged in a matter of seconds while balsa toothpicks are raining from the sky. In my humble opinion the other options I have listed will bring you much more satisfaction. It is not a matter of having mid-airs in combat it is a matter of when. So whatever plane you decide to fly must be able to survive the inevitable crash.

Two guys in our club have had great success using 1/8" plywood door skins!
I seem to remember them saying it's about CDN $20.00 for a 4' x 8' sheet and it yields over 20 fuselages! They build a square box fuse with the plywood then use foam to round out the shape!
And by the way that CDN$ 20.00 works out to about US$ 2.95 these days....

Go here. There are ton of Canadians here that would love to help you. They are on a membership drive to get Canada into the RCCA. Look for the combat board.

By the way plywood doesn't last long in combat. check out the georigia combat web site. Good info on how to make long lasting foam combat planes.

"Bat Rule" Huh? Is that why you're flying Bandits now?
Are you going to fly Lou's Boeing in '03? How is that Ki-64 coming along? So many questions. It's because you never write anymore.

A lot of the guys who fly scale combat around here don't do the fleet of identical airplanes thing in scale. They tend to have a fleet of different looking planes.
That might make it harder to really know your plane's performace, but it doesn't seem to make a huge difference except at the higest levels of competition.

What is up with you? working much?
Bat's rule but bandits are easier to build.
Waiting on Lou's Boeing to show up . I guess they are close to being ready to cut on the CNC. Should be almost a arf. Precut fiberglass rods slots in the wing and fuse. Crutch motor mounts similiar to the ki-64. Should be alot of fun. I love that navy blue colors. I am also getting another ki64 from lou. I should start them around christmas. I let you know how it go's once I start them. I am also going to get a few Fulmars from Hat. I going to make a push to make the top 10 in scale next year.
I was thinking about putting o.s in them but I think weight is going to be a issue so I will stick with norvel for scale. But I will go to o.s for a few open planes that I will have.

Hi RDC,
Yeah, I've been working a lot - but now I'm off for a good long while. Why don't you come up and we'll practice some combat? Or I could come down there, I suppose.
I need to get some G10 to start on my Ki-64's. I've got 7 brand new sets of T-Rex wings, and have been sewing ripstop sleeves to cover them with!
Just got two more OS25FX's, so I should be set on engines. Gonna try the OS in the Ki-64's.
Been working on a Whiplash. Putting a Jett 50 FIRE in it. Check out the "Extreme Speed Prop Planes" forum on this site. It should fly fairly fast.
Keep in touch.
