You might be thinking ot the Byron "Striking Back" airshow.
For several years Byron put on an extensive show with simulated dogfighting, carrier launches and well timed pyrotechnics.
The aircraft would drop the DUMMY bombs as accurately as possible and the person controling the pyrotechnics would set off the PLACED CHARGE on cue. Made it look like the models were dropping live bombs.
I'm fairly certain that the video from one of thier shows is still available. Our club has a copy, (the legal kind... with all the lables...) so I should be able to get the info for where to get it.
