WRCC Combat Meet, February 17, 2002 Elm Hill Field, Mulvane Kansas

Warm and windy with gusts over 30 mph greeted today's hot pilots looking for blood! Nine throttle jocks showed up with 15 airplanes to tear up the skies to the cheers of 17 dedicated spectators. The day's pilot roster included the following:
Dean "Tattoo" Tuinstra
Mitch "No nickname yet" Eaves
Dean "Crash" Cranston
Dave "Mayday" Mullin
Scott "Butcher" Duncan
"Hot" Rod Christie
Mike "Bear" Tallman
Neil "Lawn Dart" Spies
"Hammrin" Hank Weyland
The furballs were tight, and the action has never been wilder as 4 rounds were flown for each class. Despite close calls and clenching moments all afternoon, there were no mid-airs today!!! The high winds did produce several nice dirt naps, but nothing that couldn't be repaired! Hammrin and Mayday provided one of the most spectacular duels...so tight were they wrapped up with eachother...that Hammrin flew out of it "flying the wrong plane" (while his dirt napped) and Mayday flew away with the kill! A very big thanks to Wayne Mayhughe for always having Elm Hill ready for battle, and thank you to Jan "Sassy" Stout for CD and time keeping, as well as our monthly combat photo! Also Thank you to Steve Dockery for taking on score keeper duties for the afternoon! Don't miss our next meet on March 17th!

Combat business
The issue of crape paper streamers shredding due to the high winds or damp conditions is something that has plagued us for years, and today was no exception to this frustration. In the past year we have run several inclimate meets using plastic "flagging" tape with favorable results and little difference in scoring. Flagging tape is usually orange in color (although it does come in different colors) and seen around construction sites. It is 1" to 1 1/4" wide (depending where you get it). It can be purchased at any hardware store or even Wal-Mart. Today it was proposed to stop using crape streamers and go to flagging tape exclusively. The consensus is for all pilots who plan to attend the March 17th meet to bring a roll, and we will be voting on it at the pilot's meeting before the meet starts.

Announcement!
Mitch Eaves, who has been flying with us for the last few months would like to announce that the Milford R/C'ers of Junction City Kansas will be holding the "First Central Kansas Combat Meet" on Saturday, April 13th, 2002 at their flying field at Farnum Creek Park, Milford Lake, Kansas. Entry is free, and they will be flying the same classes and same rules as the WRCC. Pilot's meeting at 12:45, combat begins at 1:00 pm. For more info, call Mitch Eaves (785)-485-2043, e-mail [email protected], or visit their web site at http://www.geocities.com/milfordrc/ AMA is required! Lets get a group of WRCC pilots together and go kick their butts!

Default March Report!

WRCC Combat Meet, March 17th 2002, Elm Hill Field, Mulvane Kansas

Picture perfect weather (Finally!) greeted ten gritty combat pilots for an afternoon of wild air-to-air action! The daring fighter jocks on the day's mission roster were as follows:
Mike "Bear" Tallman
Dean "Tattoo" Tuinstra
"Hot" Rod Christie
John "Kamikaze" Meanor
Mitch Eaves (From Junction City, Kansas)
Scott "Butcher" Duncan (From Wellington)
Dave "Mayday" Mullen
Don Howard (From Ponca City, Ok)
Don Lambring (From Ponca City, Ok)
"Hammrin" Hank Weyland

Four exciting rounds were flow for each class, as 10 pilots and 15 airplanes vied for this month's air supremacy. The action has never been better in the sunny skies over the Mulvane Battle field, as 12 spectators held their breath and cheered on their favorite fighters. The air war took it's toll, as there were four mid-airs on the day. The first was a merciless buzz-saw by Bear, taking half of Butcher's tail off in Black Sheep Class. Butcher's P-51 was a total pile up, as Bear flew on to finish the round The second was a shot heard for miles as Kamikaze's wild thing tore through Bear's Battle Floyd in Eagle Class. Both planes went down, but Kamikaze was up and running for the next round. The third saw Tattoo hit hard, wing to wing, with Bear's back up Battle Floyd in Eagle Class. Bear went to a dirty grave, as Tattoo finished the round with his wing cocked sideways...but hanging on! The fourth mid-air once again had Tattoo and Bear trying to occupy the same airspace in Warthog Class. Both planes took a dirt nap with Tattoo's engine-less plane doing some interesting tail slides before impact! A special mention must go out to Kamikaze, who hasn't lost his lust for flying two feet off the deck...and collecting suckers...just ask Hot Rod!!! The next battle is scheduled for April 21st. See you all there!

Special thanks To Jan "Sassy" Stout for once again taking on CD, Scorekeeping and time keeping duties as well as taking our combat picture every month! We also wish to thank Don Lambring for helping Sassy, when technical difficulties took him out of the competition. Without volunteers, we couldn't hold these meets, and we would like to encourage ANYONE in the club who would like to help out to please do so! Thanks!

Combat Business- The pilots attending the meet today voted on, and voted in, the use of "flagging" tape as streamer material to help in the shredding problem that has plagued us for years. The use of flagging tape is optional and can be used as well as the crape streamers we have been using. Today was the first meet to see this new rule in place...and every pilot in attendance used flagging tape. The official WRCC combat rules will be updated to reflect this addition. The possibility of future RCCA/AMA sanctioning of all, or part, of our future meets was also discussed. A decision was not made, and we will discuss this topic more at our April meeting, and please be prepared to vote on this at the April Combat meet!
