First ....... KOOL [8D] Welcome to the dark side [sm=spinnyeyes.gif] Combat is a great way to fly.
Go to the RCCA website: http://www.rccombat.com/forum/active.asp for all info on the different classes and rules. The easiest class and less costly is the SSC. Start there, IMHO
Then go to Treneffrc to get their Battle Axe SSC: http://www.treneffrc.com/default.asp Best plane to start with. It is extreamly durable, best plane to fly. You can read about it and purchase directly from them. You will not be disappointed.
At the RCCA site, you can find out who and where they fly around where you are.
Take a look and get back with me.
Dave

Go do a bit of research at the RCCA web site for events close to you, I believe there is one in MN this weekend, it would be worth the effort to drive there and see it first hand! Guys there would be more than happy to answer questions and show you the equipment.
Short version, its all about chasing streamers, 30' of streamer on the tail of the plane and you try to remove the competitions without hitting them preferably. Its a lot of fun.

so let me get this staight, you attach a 30 ft streamer to the tail of your plane and to win you need to use you planes prop to cut off the opponents streamer?

There are 2 sanctioned combat events in Wisconsin this summer, not sure how close you are to WI. There may be clubs in your area that have club combat on a regular basis. You'll have to check on the clubs in your area to find out.
Streamers are torn off the other plane with the wings more often than cut with the prop. Look at some of the videos posted on RCCA for a good idea of what happens [8D]

Chris, I tie about 20 feet of crepe paper to a length of string that is about 10 feet long. I would like more length than that, but the tall grass tends to break longer streamers at launch time. Try to set your planes up with the lowest pitch props that you can find, the lower the speed, the better the dog fighting. Higher speed planes don't really dog fight as much as they just do high speed passes at each other, I call it jousting. A lot of good combat time gets wasted with mid airs, and the interest in flying combat will go away when the mid airs get out of control. My favorite combat flying is done at less than 40 mph, and I get about 1200 combat minutes [100 matches] in every summer with the least amount of effort or expense.
