Default Norvel .15

I'm not a combat guy, mostly sport RC. On the lookout for Norvel engines, I came across a number of Norvel .15s, non RC, some ball bearing, some not. Are these engines of any value in combat? Desireable, even if obsolete? Advantages? Deficiencies?

I liked the power mine made, but you had to keep that crummy muffler on. I never got around to putting a backplate tap on one to use for pressure instead and to heck with that muffler, but then they still go catapulting off during a midair.

Top that with the fact that you'll have to buy the extras for parts as Norvel is no more, I wouldn't advise using the things. We play a limited CL Scale Race locally and it's a good engine there and it's been dominated by Fox 15 bb's. But you can get new parts for those. As for Scale Race, thats a Nelson or Rossi engine sport and there isn't any engine under 200 bucks that would do for that sport.

Clean,

Thanks,

Yes, parts.

I guess I've got a lifetime supply of these things. The .15 size isn't that much in demand, even for sport.

But what are the performance demands? What prop and fuel for what RPM?

And what if I found a way to adapt the Norvel .25 muffler to it? Weight is about the same and it would be a bolt on affair. And if a part broke, likely the rod? I've got a great many miles on a couple of .06s and .074s. They don't seem to wear out but I don't push them like you might a Nelson or Rossi.

Andy, even if you aren't into combat, SSC planes are alot of fun. You could set one up with a rudder on a arrow shaft for sport flying. It is impressive to see how well a .15 with a 8x3 prop can pull around these big flying wings.

CP,

Had to look that up. SSC, Slow, Survivable Combat.

" In a nutshell - the SSC birds have huge wing area (minimum 400 inches), minimum weight at 2.5 lbs, and maximum motor size at a stock .15 that can be purchased for $60 or less. The prop is standardized with a Master Airscrew 8x3 and is limited to 17,000 RPM. One Caveat to the whole thing is that, in sanctioned events, any combatant that wishes to do so can purchase the days winner's engine for $100 and the poor sap has to sell it to him. That effectively keeps every one honest about engine mods and keeps the speed to around 50 mph max. "

Sounds like fun, even just to buzz around. Now if I can convince a couple of local guys to join in,,,,,
