Default Bat Trick Build Question

In building the Bat Trick the instructions state:

"Cover the wings with 1.5 or 2 oz fiberglass cloth or rip stop nylon. or just plain nylon fabric. Lay the glass on the wing and then brush on water based polyurethane varnish. "

Clearly this is the make the wing more durable, however I was thinking of just putting packing tape on the wings to save weight, I'm going with a .15 and I figure that's a better choice.

Will I have issues?

Thanks.

The packing tape is OK, but I have found that at least with the 3M extreme packing tape that it is sensitive to UV light. The adhesive will disentigrate by the time the season is over. If you can cover the packing tape with something that blocks the light, everything will stick just fine.

Okay, great. This thing has slight negative dihedral, correct? Tips of wings pointed slightly down.

Default Bat Trick Build Question

I have never built a bat trick, so I cannot say. I could not imagine that it is supposed to have anhedral though. Hopefully someone else knows.

Default Bat Trick Build Question

I once built a wing for my Bat trick where I put the bottom down when the spars were drying in the wing. So the bottom of the wing was flat and the top sloped down, or anhedral. It flew the same as the wings that had the designed dihedral.

You might consider using "Zagi" style colored shipping tape. You get color, covering and fuel proofing in one very thin light weight layer. You can get colored shipping tape at http://www.fast-pack.com/colored_tape.html for about half the price of "Zagi" tape and it's just as good quality. Prep the surface of the wing with some spray adhesive like the OLD formua 3M77 if you can still find it. Or very lightly dust the wing with the new 3M77. Or buy the Elmers brand spray adhesive from Home Depot which is foam safe. In ay case, let the adhesive dry for 15 minutes and then put the tape on. You'll get a much better bond that way. You can also take any small wrinkles out of the tape with an iron. Just be careful with the temp. I use a Century iron and set the temp. for 325 degrees with a sock on the iron. You can get a really nice looking finish if you take your time and are careful.

As for the anhedral, I've built a couple Bat Trick wings and some times the root wasn't completely square. Or you may have not glued it completely square. If it's only a slight amount then you'll probably never notice it when flying.

From the pics and the fact that the wings are marked "R" and "L" this is an anhedral wing. Strange, but what the heck.

I hear you. I have tons of Zagi tape and 3M77, hence why I wanted to use it. Should build lighter that way, and will be easy to repair (just put on more tape).

I'm confused, from the photos I've sen of the Bat, the wings seem to be sloping down not up. Perhaps it's just the angle. I'm pretty sure they where cut that way, else one would lean more than the other.

Hmmmmmmm. Any ideas?

Here the scoop.
Zagi tape is nice. But its not nearly as crash resistence as polyester or ripstop. It holds the wing together in mid airs and crashes.
The bat wing is a modified 479. The picture you are refering to is my SSC mini choker from the "Louisville slugfeast". The wing did have anhedral. Mike doesn't cut in the dihedral. You can do it yourself. They seam to fly the same. The curve part of the wing is on top and the flat on the bottom.

Thanks. I'm going with the tape since this is a Open Class A .15 ship, and thus the weight is going to make a difference.

I have anhedral, I'm going with it. Hope it flies okay.

I didn't used to pay attention to the dihedral and let the builder sand in whatever he wanted. I've adjusted the cuts so now it comes with a little dihedral. I've built a few where I forgot to cut it in and had a bit of anhedral and it didn't seem to make any differance.

You just need to spend moretime inverted!

I have the one with anhedral, I guess I can flip it over but the servo is installed and the wing is covered. I'll see how it works first.

It's funny, the pics I've seen look like they all have anhedral, I guess the angles where confusing.

Thanks. Great kit.

The wings have washout so you do not want to use it upside down as that will give you washin. While it will fly it will be very snappy and not fly very well.

Don't ask me how I know this!

Thanks. I’m not using the wings upside down. The right side says “R” the left “L.” But, I get what you’re saying. Can’t flip the wings.

Again, great kit.
