Nice. Do you run that store ? What kind of shipping is it ? USPS trackable / insured ?
My plan is to run it on 5% nitro with a 7x7 prop... Which plug would you recommend ? I have tons of #8 OS plugs...
When was this engine first released btw ?

I run my XLS on 10% omega, i use an OS #3 plug but a #8 should also work, this engine was around for a long time as a XL.15 then i think it was about 1-1/2 years ago they redid this engine as the XLS, it now makes more power yet weighs a little more than the XL.

I was wondering if turning the cylinder liner, closing off the ex-port a little at a time and test running till You get to the 17K RPM limit, might be the easiest thing to do?

You might try the OS LA-15. After a few tanks of fuel they will generally turn 18,000+ with the 8x3, but can be slowed down simply by using lower nitro fuel (15%).
They OS is very durable, with a strong crankcase, and no bearings to go bad. Also, since the LA includes the OS A3 glow plug, it ends up being about $9 cheaper than the Magnum. And I don't think I've blown a plug in a couple years - the A3's are awesome.
Here's an article on LA-15 setup. [link=http://www.treneffrc.com/LA-15%20Clunk%20Tank%20Secrets.pdf]http://www.treneffrc.com/LA-15%20Clunk%20Tank%20Secrets.pdf[/link]

RE: magnum xls 15 mods?
Hello again guys and Happy New Year to you all.
Ive had my new .15xls now for a coupe of months and I am quite fond of it on my ripper. One thing that maybe different at our club vs other clubs is that we dont have the 17,500 rpm limit that other clubs may be using, so I started just tweaking the engine a little here and there trying to get a few more r's out of her. I installed a header/tuned muffler from traxxas off of a car setup that I won off of fleabay for $3.00, thats right, THREE bucks, just to see if it would improve anything or make things worse. I had to cut the 90° bend off the muffler side of the header(was used for rc cars) so that I would have a straight pipe header, then just zip-tied the muffler back onto the header. The whole new header and muffler setup is about 6 and a half inches long now.I tried it out last week and I likes it!! I do run 30% heli fuel in this magnum( its 23% oil ) and Im still using the combat prop and I got a reading of 21850 when I tached it. This plane now has pretty much unlimited vertical, whereas before after about 2 seconds of vertical it would just slow down and stall. Im impressed with it.
Just wanted to give you guys an update on it.
Take care and build some "targets" for this years season

Almost 22000 with a 8x3 prop? John, are you saying it will pull a 40 oz. SSC vertical? That's awesome! Makes me wonder what it would turn a .15 pylon prop?
One thing that I've noticed with mass produced ball bearing engines in general is that they are set up too tight for the cranks to spin freely with just a flick of the prop, including this engine and the CVA. There is more HP lost because of this drag than most realize. Check the feel of a Cyclon, Jett or Nelson and it is no mystery where some of their "magic" power comes from. I think the XLS would be a worthy engine to work with...some C/L combat flyers use them as practice engines for FAI, which says quite alot.
