can someone please explane me the basics of designing flying wings - more interested about the sickle's kind.
thanks.

Kinder,
I'll take a stab at this since no one else has. There are two things to know to make a successful flying wing and the first is the only real requirement:

1. The CG should be at 10-12% or so of the chord length instead of the 25-33% that is normal for an airplane with a tail.

2. Flying wings like an airfoil that has a little "reflex" in it. This however is not an absolute requirement as I have made flat-bottomed SPAD flying wings that have worked fine. I just had to reflex the elevons up a little to provide the needed "up".

Build a Sickle and fly it, you won't be disappointed. The CG is really the critical thing. You can move it back from the 10-12% once you have flight tested the plane.

On the first flying wing I designed and built I had pretty much the same information presented here and was able to successfully build on that worked. I essentially took the Sickle design and put the wing on the top of the PVC fuselage instead of the bottom.

Good luck,
Adam

A while back, I read somewhere (a book on aircraft design) that flying wing airfoils should have low pitching moments. However, as adamdb pointed out, it's not critical, and apparently no one pays much attention to that in RC. If you page though some of the airfoil libraries out there, you can find airfoils specifically designed for flying wings. But you can make a wing fly just fine with just about any airfoil (or no airfoil, eg PBF).
