Making drift tires

OK, so i'm gonna take my super 10 rally and set it up for drifting.

Stage 1 - get materials, PVC pipe (so i heard)

If anyone has any advice while I do this go ahead!

OK, next remove the foam (if you have it) from the rim.

Problem - the ridge that the foam attaches too is too wide for the PVC tube - so it will need filing down.

Actually, the ridges on the rim were soft enough and thick enough to cut off.

Next, cut the pipe to the right length. If your using tube, then this will probably be the first thing that you will do.

to fit PVC pipe onto rims, what i do is chuck em in the oven for about 2 mins

makes em nice and soft, but not too soft, and you can fit them over the rim and they'll set there :)

Thats a great idea! I tried rubber malleting the one on and it worked, a really tight fit too. But I can't get it off! I'll try putting it in the oven to get it off.

i dunno about putting the PVC tyre AND the rim in the oven... maybe in some really hot water or something.

Exept that PVC is crap and only real drifters use ABS.

Yeah, that wasn't a good idea. I got it out but ruined the rim.

However, some success even though it looks a mess. Its probably really badly balanced.

Check places that repair mobile homes. Thats the plumbing they use.

Nah man. I live in Japan they don't have movile homes - but i'll look around.

PS how long do pVC tires last?

pretty long. more then 50 runs i bet. you were supose to put the pvc in the oven the rim. pvc will expand alittle then put it on the rim when hot *caution* then when on put it in cold watter. contracting it so its a really tight fit.

Won't water get inside the rim?
Just for giggles I'm going to set up some for a T-Maxx/Savage and play with one of my MT's like that.

Nah - i gotta super 10 rally so it's 70mm diameter.

I softed them up in the oven for a few mins and then banged the rim in with a rubber mallet. Hopefull as they wear they will balance themselves out a bit.

The wheels are all ready! As soon as i've finished my gearbox i'm gonna give them their first run tomorrow!

ur rims should have two small holes in em, any water in there will slowly come out.

I never bothered about using water, I just let nature take its course :P

I'll try it next time.

need to find out when i can buy some ABS

No offense, but even the ones that you claim turned out okay still look like crap. Really i mean no offense. But below you will see a wheel and tire set that i made from ABS. Truly i think if you take your time and be precise, you can make a very professional looking drift tire / wheel combo. Without having to pay those high prices for same stuff they sell on those "popular auction sites".

Yeah, they're kinda crap. They are after all my first try.

Man, they're like driving on ice! I need to soften the rear suspension a bit. It's way harder than I thought! [:'(] I'll keep trying tho'!
