Just charge your batteries at like 2.0 amps and you'll get great runtimes. Or if you want, and have the money, you can get the Yokomo or IB 4200maH packs.

Maybe half an hour or so.

3K NiMh's @ 2A will take between 1 to 1.5 hours depending on how discharged they are

You can even get 4300's now ;)

how long will play time be?

About 1 minute of runtime per 100maH of battery capacity. Damn, how many times hsa this been asked?

what about charging at one amp

1 amp charging will give you a lack of punch.

You won't properly charge the pack at anything below 2A, just get 2 or 3 packs of 3700's which you can get for about 25 bucks a pack and charge them at 4A

Punch is the least of your problems if you're drifting on plastic, punch is for grip racers

Anything above 4A will see a slight increase in punch and a slight decrease in runtime but will reduce your cells lifetime - NiMh's DON'T LIKE HEAT ;)

I charge my cells @ 5 amps when I race spec class. That way, the cells will get used to the demands of a hotter motor. But 2-4 amps will do you just fine.

I find that punch is somewhat important when wanting to use the throttle to change angle and attitude mid-drift. Sure, if you're full throttle most of the time, it won't really matter, but I'm just picky like that.
