yeah, definetly no low voltage cutoff on the XL5
sounds like you've got a good plan for getting this bandit running cheaply then moving on to a newer RC
on the 6 cell vs 7 cell, a quality 6 cell pack will outrun a cheap 7 cell pack. I think I'd advise getting a high capacity 6 cell over a 7 cell
the 7 cell will also burn up your motors faster, so they'll need replacement more often

That would be a Tamiya Toyota Hilux, those are rare these days.
But I'm sure the Tamiya F-350 Highlift that's still in production is the same thing.

Lipo is really the way to go you can get 45 plus mins with a lipo under $30.
just buy an external lipo cutoff or a lipo voltage buzzer you can get one under $10

Here's the lipo I have it's a 2 cell lipo 2s 7.4 volts and it has 5200 mah you have full power till right at the end when it all drops off at once.
I thought that I only wanted nimh till I bought my first lipo and I was amazed I used to carry 7 nimh batteries now I carry 1 lipo.

I'm in the exact same situation. I created a new post (sorry), but I suppose I should copy it here.
I've got myself a stock 10 year old bandit that I would like to update. Model (2401/2410), Stinger motor, mechanical speed control, ect. I figure I could pick up a Castle Sidewinder 4600 or 5700 system some lipos and be good to go. Then I started looking at anassociatedB4.1.
A new B4.1 kit would cost about $400 with a Castle Sidewinder 4600 or 5700. I realize I can get something comparable for less if I buy a RTR, but half of the reason I'm doing this is for the sake of building it.
I figure to upgrade the bandit will cost me roughly $200. $40 for complete Bandit vxl gearbox (I've been told the stock differential and idle gears will fail under the new motor) $30 for somebearingcarriers andbearings. and $130 for the Brushless setup.
However, I'm more than willing to spend the difference ($200) on the Bandit if it would becomparableto a B4.1. Better shocks, some aluminum hop ups, maybe even new servos.

The Sidewinder 4600 (and SCT 3800 for that matter) is WORLDS better than the Associated brushless setup, and if he gets the Factory Team B4.1 he gets the snazzy new shocks and CVAs. If you can afford to snag a kit and do it RIGHT, why bother doing it any other way?

yep. and if you don't even have that, just get the steel idler for like 8 bucks. the plastic one strips extremely easy, i stripped mine on the XL-5 setup. i now have a steel idler gear, steel top gear, and a plastic diff. i run the VXL setup and have had no problems with this combo of gears, although with a good lipo the diff would probably strip.

I appreciate the replies guys. I'm going to start fresh with the B4.1. Looking forward to putting the thing together ASAP. The Bandit's still in fine shape; some grease and a new battery and my future kids will have something to bash around with. Also its nice to now that it can be brushless ready for cheap. Thanks Again

no problem. and if your looking for something to put in your Bandit cheap and for a beginner, then the XL-5 ESC paired with a Venom Fireball motor of your choice is a great combo. It won't cost you more than 60 bucks, and the motor is rebuildable so no more buying $20 new motorsbecauseyour brushes are bad. Plus, it will add lots of power to that Bandit, especially for a brushed setup.
