Default Help a noob, please

Hi, Obviously I'm new here.
Anyways I've been looking to purchase an RC buggy for my kids and myself. I'm pretty good with my hands and with tools, but I am not an RC hobbyist by any means. I've had decent RC cars in the past when I was a kid and enjoyed them all.
So what I'm looking for is an offroad electric RC vehicle. We have a large yard, and nice quiet streets to drive on. I'm looking for something fairly fast with long range, but also something thats tough. I'm not looking to make repairs every 20 min like my friend has to do with his. We dont plan to race our car, nor are there any really rough areas for jumping and whatnot. Just a lot of flat land and pavement. From all my reading, it would appear I'm looking for a good low to mid range hobby grade car. What I dont want to do is go down to Target or Toys r Us lol. We've been that route before and were always disappointed.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Welcome

How much do you figure for a 'mid range' car? Also, do you prefer a type? Buggy? Truck? Corr truck (aka Short Course)?

Aren't too many 4wd buggies for that price, but plenty of 2wd 1/10th scale brushless buggies. Do you want 4wd or is 2wd alright?

Well, who DOESNT want a 4WD? lol
However, considering all my relatively flat land, I suppose a 2WD would suffice.

Not bad at all. I'll save the link and check out some more reviews on it if I can find them. Thanks!

Simple physics will show that 4wd always gives more traction allowing the vehicle to ultimately traverse rougher terrain, but 2wd isn't as bad as you might think. I usually recommend a 2wd to start off with simply because of how they make you a better driver because it's more about the driver than the vehicle's ability. And really as long as a 2wd vehicle has a good set of tires, it will handle pretty good. But don't get me wrong, 4wd is great too!

RC cars suck. Teach your young'uns to fly. Planes and helicopters are way more chalanging.

You realise most of us in the car forums don't draw our pensions yet?

PS. Spelling is 'challenging', racing cars against others is challenging. Flying planes in circles in a field is not.

Competitive plane events are pretty challenging too, to be fair....

I know, but I'm not gonna let him get away with that in the car forums. Just a bit of friendly banter.

Thanks to everyone who contributed, even though there was only one suggestion....followed up by a "thumbs up" from someone else.
I'm seeing pretty much all god reviews on that buggy and will likely make a purchase soon. I'll give a few days to see if anyone else has a suggestion.
Thanks again.

Well that site doesn't have a lot of Ofna products. And they're not that much cheaper. Also Tower always has coupons you can use. And it's just me but i like the idea of dealing with a company that's in the USA where i live. But that's just me like i said. O and the website also doesn't state how much shipping is so it may be a lot or free LOL IDK

Well there is a reason why there was only one suggestion. In the sub $400 range there isn't a hell of a lot to choose from for 4wd RTR buggies, that are durable
The only options I can think of outside the ofna is the redcat one, but I've read so many reviews on it not being that good.

BTW pyromatic177 that sites based in Minnesota(off their contact info so even traxxasadict3.3 was wrong) so last I checked they were still part of the USA

I wonder if they would have refunded $700 as easily as Tower did when a package never arrived once. Also, if you are a member of their club you get massive discounts.
