Default What motor and esc for 8th scale buggies(conversion)?

Hello. I have two 8th scale buggies that i want to convert to electric from nitro.
Losi 8ight 2.0
Ofna hyper 7 PBS

Looks like i can get the motor mount kits for about $80 each.

Im at a loss of what motors and ESC to put in them. I will be back yard bashing in grass and some on road. Also what batteries and charger do you recommend?

I want some reliable components. Doesnt need to be race worthy just that it can take a beating.

Ive been looking at the Castle combo kits....?

Thanks!

Castle, Tekin and Hobbywing would be my choices, and in that order. Castle has their more basic Sidewinder8 system that would be fine and the more upscale MMX. MMX has features you'all probably never use but it's also rated higher. Tekin only has the RX8. Hobbywing has 2 esc's, MAX8 and Xerun something8. All have combo kits with motor, something 2000-2200kv is your best bet. Castle and Tekin have better warrantee and better motors. Tekin is most race oriented with great response and lots of adjustments.

Go 4s for the battery, 5000mah or more, 30c or more. SMC has nice lipos for good prices.

What mounts are are you going to use? Losi has their own mount and battery tray for the 8ight series. Only RC-Monster's mount and tray can beat it in my opinion. RC-Monster also has mounts for the Ofna and really nice machined Delrin battery trays.

Hello,

Thanks for the response. The Castle motors do look decent. Looks like I can pick up the Castle Sidewinder 8th with ESC for $152 or the Castle Mamba Xtream with ESC for $205. The Tekin seem a bit expensive at $320 .

Losi makes a converstion kit with motor mount + battery tray + battery straps + radio tray + 2 pinion gears + spur gear + screws and washers for $75.

I don't see that RC-Monster has a full kit like this - just a motor mount? They want $40 for just the mount.

I was going to get the Ofna made Hyper 7 electric conversion kit, but I can't seem to find it anywhere anymore.

You would get the 2200Kv motor over the 2650Kv in a buggy?

What battery charger should I get?

Thanks!

2200Kv motor and a 4S pack...you'll be more than happy.

HobbyWing EZRun Max8 combo. Of course for me I'd loose the Traxxas connectors and wire it for a single 4S pack.

How involved do you want to get into charging, or what "bells and whistles" are a must?
Is simplicity of an AC/DC charger more your style?
Do you think a dual charger would fit your needs better?

If planning on running 4S LiPo packs, for example, with a 5000mah capacity, and you want to charge at a 1C rate...you will need a charger with at least 84 watts. So round up a bit and say 100 watts is needed for power output requirement. A dual charger, if you think that is something you want, should have close to 100 watts per side to be able to charge two 4S *5000mah packs comfortably.

*Charging 5S, 6S, or larger capacity 4S packs >5000mAh may/will need more power to charge at a 1C rate.

As far as charging I don't really care how long it takes to charge, so as it does it safely. Needs to be AC.

I found this charger for $80:
ProTek RC Prodigy Touch 680 AC LiPo 6S/8A/80W

Or this $100 one:
Hitec X2 AC Plus Dual Port AC/DC Multi-Charger (6S/6A/100W)

Sweet find! I bought it along with the Castle Creations 1/8 Mamba Monster 2/Neu-Castle 2200kv.

I would have liked to see that the temperature sensor probes come free with it instead of the wifi module that i will probably only use once.

Yeah, you're probably right. The dual charger price; coupon, and free shipping would be the deal breaker for me when comparing it to the ProTek unit that you mentioned. The X2 has been in my wishlist, for awhile now, and for the simple fact it can show a pack's internal resistance of each cell.
