RE: cheap kits
If you mean $100-250 for JUST the truck, then sure...
Losi XXX-T MF2 ($225ish)
AE FTT4 ($225ish)
Tamiya stadium truck (cheap, like $100 I think.. Not a performance machine, but a really neat looking toy.. Awesome scale tires.)
Surprisingly, at this point, I'd get that Tamiya and build it. I'm looking for something FUN to run. Yes, Munkey wants to go bashing =)
Anything 1/8th scale that comes as a kit is going to be high-dollar, premium stuff. Well out of your price range.

RE: cheap kits
Tamiya has a racing buggy soon to be out. The basic is out right now (shipping actually), but the racing version should be out later. Tamiya already has a bunch of hopups lined up for the DT-02 (Desert Gator)

RE: cheap kits
I have a twin detonator. Ya it's slow, but for the price you can buy some motors.TORQUE!Alot, if the front tires make it ontop of a rock, but the back can't make it they'll burn out onrock! Does awesome wheelies too. Super durable. I've run into probly 20 trees with only one of the front tires, spun the whole truck around evry time and have never broken one part. Only prob is that eventually needs hop-ups, but the torque is always fun. I also do front flips off of jumps and have crashed many times and haven't broken anything. Diffs are already assembled, too. I'd have to say my only dislike is the lack of, whell that there isn't any real ''crawler'' chassis. Some claim to be crawler chassis, but are just aluminum chassis.
ps:Two days ago I ordered an evader pro.

RE: cheap kits
I have the Wild Dagger which is the Twin Detonator reboxed:
Pros:
Indestructable
Easy to build
Tamiya Kits are awsome
Cons:
Two motor setup expensive ESC or struggle with the MSC
Really can't race it
Need to buy bearings other stuff for runtimes
In the tradition of Tamiya, they take their vehicle, put another body on it and call it something else - the Twin Detonator is one of those. The stock friction shocks are c**p, no bearings and an ESC will cost you more than the vehicle. But I still have mine and love it.
I would get the the Desert Gator, or the Gravel Hound if I were to buy again. None of Tamiya's kits are that expensive so you can buy them and try it and if you don't like it, get another. The Nice thing about these is the stock esc, TEU-101BK, is nice and can handle a 20 turn motor. Put in a Monster Stock in them and they will really go for 30 bucks.

RE: cheap kits
I was thinkning about the same thing. Get a cheap Tamiya kit to build over the winter for something to do. The Tlt-1 is a good one also, lots of parts so takes a long time to build.
