Default esc acting up

hey, i just got a new esc and an old reciever from a friend, the esc has bec but the reciever does not. About an hour ago i was out running my car, and i was getting down to the point where my battery was at 1/5 a charge and was slowing down a lot, and the next thing i know, i see my car run off on me without any throttle on the tx, and i had to start chasing after it, lol..... WHY DID THIS HAPPEN???? it was really wierd and i hope it does not happen again...

Im thinking now that it was becuase the esc shut off form the low voltage but the reciever didnt stop and continued with low battery which caused a wrong message to the esc or something like that, but idk for sure... please help me out... thanks
