What do different brushes do to a motors performance.

they can enhance or decrease a motors performance. each along with its own pros and cons of course. keep in mind that good racing brushes [which are more expensive] although they will enhance a motor`s performance, they will need replacement more frequently. [depends on the motor and motor maintenance as well].

Does the increased frequency of replacement for racing brushes correlate with a softer metal compound?

softer compound => usually more conductive => more performance => more fatigue per run => frequent changes
