Default Can't solder motor leads on Revolution motor, please help

I've tried and tried and tried but I can't get the soldering right on the Team Orion Revolution Modified motor.
I'm using deans racing solder (the only one I have at the moment) but it just doesn't stick to the place where I'm supposed to solder the wires.
I've soldering deans before and I know I have to tint the wire as well as the surface, but it still doesn't stick at all.
I think the surface is copper, is that why it doesn't stick to it?
The brushes were factory soldered to that same surface so I know soldering on it must be possible...

Try sanding (or filing) the area first to remove any coating.

yeah I think their coated so you have to remove that coating...
Does it leave a sticky residue?

Yes! It does leave a sticky residue, a little darkish.
I will try to sand it before my next attempt to solder, thanks for the advice guys.

Damn, I give up...
I sanded the heck out of the contact point and it still slips like crazy.
I think my solder is also (partially?) responsible for the sticky residue, since even after sanding it to pure metal, after my soldering attempts the darkish residue came back (and there was none before I began soldering)
Has anyone here actually soldered on those motors (revolution) and could give some advice on how they did it?

Don't give up, what kind of iron are you using... The revolution endbell is meant to dissipate A LOT of heat when heated. So, if you have a borderline 40w or 60w iron, it might dissipate heat faster than it can generate it.

Try using a 80w iron on it and it will work, i speak from experience. The sanding is also a very good idea. You could try some kester 60/40 with resin as well, worked well for me, after I started using an 80w iron...

Yes, I have a cheapo soldering iron, I guess that must be the problem then...
I managed the Deans with it though so I thought I should be able to do the motor leads as well.
Where can I buy a soldering iron that will do the job fine? I'd rather it be inexpensive since it's pretty much for a 1 time soldering job.
Any cheap one that will do the trick? RadioShack? Homedepot?

If you are sure you will use it only once then get a cheap 80 watt but I'll bet you will need it more than once so you may want to get a good one. I use a Weller 260 watt and it takes less than 30 seconds to solder on motor wires.

I'll go with the Munkey'ism and say it myself... ''Buy cheap, buy twice !''

You would be much better off getting a good soldering iron. You don't have to buy a soldering station ! Just a very good fixed temp soldering iron from a known brand, like weller...

Go with 60 to 80w... no more.

It's normal that you managed to solder to the deans, theses things absorb heat like a **** and they never seem to cool down !!!

I tell you, buy a good one no matter what, there isnt such a big difference between 15$ and 30 or 40... and 40 is the most you'll spend !

I'll "3rd" the get a good iron suggestion.
If you don't get the part you're soldering to hot enough you'll never get a good joint. Even if you get it to stick you'll end up with a "cold" joint that will be fragile and a poor electrical connection.

Update: I went to my LHS and they were very nice and helped me with it. They had a Weller 80W I believe and it took a couple of tries before the solder got a grip.
I don't plan to do anymore soldering anytime soon so I'm fine with that. Thanks for the suggestions though guys.
