Hi All,
Decided it was time to add another Hmmwv to the list.
Only mods so far are; GM storm gray paint, custom built brush bar, and swapped the diffs around while locking the rear.
Havnt seen to many brush bars on Tamiya hummers so I made it a priority.
Hope you like.
Cheers.

Default RE: Manta Ray ball diff ?

G'day Folks,
About ten years back I bought a Tamiya Hummer and drove it with the MSC. Not much fun with that form of control so I put it aside.
I've recently put it back together and am looking at the following ESCs from my LHS. They are all roughly the same price.

Futaba MC330R
Duratrax DTXM1200 Sprint
RCLine 15t

I've read this fantastic thread and the great advice about getting a high frequency unit if possible. I'm leaning toward the Duratrax Sprint as it claims 'super high frequency' but nowhere can I find what that actually is, not even in the PDF on the manufacturer's site. Should I just take their word for it? The Futaba is only 1500Hz.

My modifications so far are minor- merely reducing the slop in the steering, suspension and ball joints with teflon washers and teflon tape, and replacing the front diff with a second ball diff.

My intended body modifications are to an M998 pickup/cargo truck, complete with wood slats and canvas roof and doors. And perhaps a 14t pinion (stock motor).

Thanks for any advice!

Out of all those, the best quality one you'll find will be the Futaba, and it will also have the highest turn limit (13 turns) as far as I know (so many different DTX models I don't keep full track on which ones are which). It also has reverse and reverse lockout, and is going be about a square inch square, it's pretty small.

The frequency really isn't all that different in those kinds of ESCs today, and doesn't really matter unless you are really concerned about performance (I'd doubt you are racing with this thing anyway). How much are the ESCs, may I ask?

Hi Guys,

I've tried to read some of the 20pages on this topic. My question is how do you guys like it? I have a 1/6 gasser and had nitros and electrics before. Now I'm thinking of getting one of these. I like their scale body design and I'd like something I can drive inside and out.

Here's my 1/6:

I tried a 3300kv w/ 21T pinion and a Feigao 5070kv with 16T pinion and this truck is surely crap above 20-25 MPH. It is much more stable with HPI wheels and Dirt Works 4.1" tires but I had to cut the body to make it fit.

It's great for the boring world of rock crawling but I found out it is awsome in snow yesterday with either tires..of course I needed the bigger tires when the snow accumulated more.
I locked the rear ball diff with slipper pegs with slight play to act as a slipper just in case. For the front I have an open diff with heavy oil.
Drifts great in the snow!
Can't handle for crock anywhere else above certain speeds.
Also the plastic used on this kit is pretty fragile as far as it fracturing and the screws are too small and eventually become loose and useless.
So the engineering cons are small shocks, too narrow, coat hanger center shaft vibrates like crazy, stupid small screws loosen and back out, and super hard tires offer no grip. This results in a slow bad handling crappy kit that might look good if you want to spend hours painting it and then driving it 5mph until it snows and you can have fun with it. IMO

After reading your post I'm not sure if it's worth $200 to get one now. Maybe if I could get a used one I'd be better off.

Thanks again,

Joe

Ok no problem. Just promise me if I ever vacation in Canada you don't let her drive the H1 while talking on her cell phone.

P.S I ordered a Redcat Tornado EPX. Will get it on the 27th.

Also, it's overpriced but it's around $130 and tower will keep saying stock status is in Late *insert month* like forever lol.
The problem is I don't see any kits that offer a 1/10th truck that is AWD and isn't silly big.
If I had the money I'de get a truggy but a buggy with truck tires is as good, just might not look as good IMO.

Oh yea, it seems people like their DF-01 XB kits. I'm betting it's a better chassis (anything is better I bet) but RTR for over $200 I don't think it's worth it unless you don't already have the electrics.

Anyone bought GPM parts for their hummers? Any specific plastic pcs break on them?

What are your thoughts on the 55T lathe motor for it?

M1025 is build now with bearings, 55T lathe motor, Hitech 645 servo and a 4500mah pack. For a radio I have a Spektrum but decide to use that for my L3 and TT01 so I'm using an OLD MRC STICK am radio!! Since it's for crawling around the distance wasn't important.

Let me know if there's some good tires or other upgrades that would work well or are needed.

Well, I haven't posted in this thread since 2005! For those still following this thread, I thought I'd post some updates about how the ol' Hummer has held up.

One of the best things to happen to the Hummer is all the new tires in 1.9 that are available. I've been using the Trail Doctor Ultra Soft tires and am VERY pleased with the performance/traction gain. Very highly recommended! Others seem very pleased with their RC4WD tires.

I've also switched from a 55t to a 75t motor. The Trail Doctor tires are a little bit taller and I needed more grunt/torque. That really slowed down the Hummer! Better torque though. It just didn't have enough speed to get up-and-over some obstacles. So I went to a 7-cell battery pack. Much better!

I also when to a completely locked front diff instead of a limited slip. Now that there isn't much left of the original Hummer it's a great trail/trials vehicle!

Some recent pics of the Hummers' configuration:

3SGTE - love the yellow H2 - very nice job! I sent you a quick pm (hope you got it). Can I ask what shocks you used in the first image? They look a little longer than standard one - I'm hoping to raise a humvee I hope to get soon (yes - I too have been biten by the bug...) and make it a sort of off-road beast

After reading this post on the Hummer, I decided to build one. Here are some pics of my build. Diffs locked/ swapped front with back. uprated prop, alloy motor mount, ball raced bearings through out. Its a tribute to a modeler called Jason, His Hummer, was a real inspiration.

Enjoy.

Nice job!!

I'm wondering what would be the best tire/rim combo to use to get some more grip and size. I know I'll have to move the body but I'd like to get something that would look good.

Hi to all, this IS an old thread, but fantastic!!! I've gone through ever post and read it ALL.....the only question I can't find an answer for brand of the Yellow H2 Body that
was adapted to the Tamiya chassis...is this the 1/6 NewBright body or something else?

After all this time I finally got a Hummer Kit version....just happened to drop in to my LHS and found it sitting on the top shelf...complete except for the
metal steering rods and 5mm balls....don't seem to hard to find though. The kit was partially assembled and the motor mech esc and other parts were
still sealed in the bags...I worked out a deal for it from the $275cdn listed to $150 cash no tax (killer here in Canda) Hope this was a deal for finding one
with the original mint box too in 2010.

Well on my way to ordering parts for it...not sure if the GPM parts are really needed in aluminum, but they DO look great!!!

If anyone has some new input on these older models that would be great

Maybe this one will be revived !!!
