I am interested in buying a rustler or a stampede just to drive around on the street, dirt-- no racing. Would it be better to just buy a RTR vxl model or buy the cheaper regular model and upgrade later?

vxl. It goes as fast as the power you pump into it. Check out Maxamps.com you can buy a combo pack for $300 that will make the thing go 70mph (nice charger to boot). Or just get a mild lipo and the thing will run for an hour!

The RTR is a great value. Comes out way cheaper then when you want to upgrade later.

+1 the plain XL5 rustler plus the cost of the motor and ESC is already more than the VXL RTR

and you still don't have the metal tranny, bearings, better servo, hex hardware..

i agree go vxl from the begenning. unfortunetly i already had a xl-5 so i was forced to get the vxl parts. however, if you think about it, most people even upgrade the vxl. so if you want to get to pick out your own parts, the xl-5 is nice.
