If your on a budget maybe try the new db-01 "durga" buggy. According to Tamiya it's more or less a plastic version of their trf501x. Though you might want to wait a while and see what kind of reviews it gets.

Good racer?! TRF501X...
I am no racer, but I probably wouldn't race a DF-02...

It all depends on your driving skill level.

The DARK IMPACT was even better than the DF-02 at the racetrack.
The gravelhound I had 25 sec laps, and the dark impact I set a new track electric record 18 second laps.
Shortly after I got a good record, a darn XXX-T came in and took it away from me.....[]

if your going to race a tamiya buggy. you need to get the 501X. or wait and see reviews bout the new "durga" its supposed to be a "sport" version of the 501X and should be a great budget racer.

It all depends on driving skill like said above, the only thing you'd want on a DF-02 or 03 are better shocks and maybe a slight upgrade to the drivetrain.

The price of the 501X is too steep for most people.....

RE: tamiya racing buggys
I own a Df02 Rising storm and a TRF501X. my friend and racing team mate owns the Df03 Dark Impact. So I think Im more than qualified to answer this. The Df02 is a great car. I have loaned it to a friend to race in the novice class and he kicked butt. The 4wd keeps it going straight when many beginers get excited, mash the gas and spin out with a 2wd car. That being said, It is a "novice" type car. THe Df03 Dark impact is about 2 steps above the Df02. Although my friend broke his Dark impact chassis right in half on the same track the Rising storm raced on without a problem. Neither the Df02 or 03 compare to my TRF501X. and there not supposed to. My 501X is for 4wd Mod racing. The fastest of the fast. The other cars are made for a lower level or R/Cing. The bottom line is; Buy it, have fun with it. But don't expect to win any high level races with it.

I got the B44 because of my budget, I really wanted the 501X, but a 500 dollar price tag and being a belt drive turned me away...[&o]
Just take a look at the track i race on. Does it look like a 501X would do well,I thought yes, then no??? And decided a B44 would tolorate the loose dirt.

Sweet track. I have never even heard of anyone having diff trouble on their TRF501X except on this forum. I do prefer shaft drive though.

Yep, that's my hometown racetrack, it's really good because it's fenced in and all that cool stuff.
IT is even better at night, because people start getting even better traction, those nitro guys can really smooth it out
pretty quick. I've been out there on the track with them a bunch of times most are very good drivers.
A couple guys are ok, not the best but medium, it's hard to explain because you guys were not there with me.
I dont much care for owning a nitro, but they are fun to see race each other. I usually have enough time
to watch 'em, before my next heat.

Yep for a season and a half(just about). It's a great buggy also.
Never broke anything, just had a problem with the stock chassis not holding the screws in place.
So did this number at the last Apreciation Day race. We got to race and eat free of charge, talk about awesome fun!
The hamburger I ate was good!!
