I've made a nice little ST from my Tamiya DF-03. Excellent platform. Tough, bashable, and upgradeable if you want to race it. I'm using 2.2" MT rims and HPI Dirtworks tires, along with a MM 5700 and 2s LiPo. Nice buggy!

Try the Academy SB rtr.
I have the SB Pro(kit version) (w/ upgrades)
Rigth now, i am running st tires and wheels on it, and it is great. The buggy has hexes all around, and that makes it an easy swap from ST to Buggy and back. If you use nitro rustler rears on this buggy, it makes it about an inch skinnier than a GT2. They add about 2 inches to the width of the car because of the offset.
There is a review of that car on this site, and here's a link to where you can purchase it:

The only thing you really need for this car is some bearings and a slipper clutch.

Oops. I overlooked the RTR thing. Well, for a RTR cheap and 4wd the academy is probably your best bet. I would still consider the DI. It's a fun and easy kit to build, and makes a very durable truck. Lots more hopups than available for the academy, and replacement parts will be MUCH easier to get. Don't fear the kit!!
