Adding 1 battery cell or going to a larger pinion or a 15-14 turn motor would do it in a drag race. YOU'd have to go to a 10-12 turn motor to beat it on a track.

Anything with a 14 turn or less would probably drag race the rustler and win. These guys here are all over recommending specific motors, I can't because the only one I used is A Tower hobbies 14 turn quad.

You really can't gear anything lower than a 14t motor in a pede. The rule is that you go 2 teeth below the # of turns on the pinion. There is a rock crawling manufacturor that makes 10 tooth but I'm not sure if that'll fit with a 90t spur.

those team orion pro bb motors i hear are quite good. or just up the cell by one. instead of trying to find a 10/90 why not just get like 15/86?

the vxl motor gearing depends mostly on what truck its running in. in your case, i know you have a rustler. so the gearing you have stock (23/86) will work fine. traxxas chose to give it that gearing so thats what i would reccomend also.
brushless motors normally arn't reffered to as turns but more the kv of the motor (the vxl is 3500kv). for the reccord tho, the velineon motor is considered a 10 turn motor.

i have a pede, burnt the stock titan, got a speed gems 15t quad. its way better than the titan, both in accel and top speed. it cost me $33 at lhs.

also, ball bearings will help with speed.

that team orion pro bb motor (15t) will beat a rustler. it will still wheelie also. but for the long run i would much rather have the 17turn or 19turn motor. they will get longer runtime and are more suited in a pede. they will also run cooler.

I have a speed gem 15t dbl in my XL5 pead geared 16/87. I allso have stock Titan rustler geared 23/86.. the pead definetly will out run the rustler on straight out. On a track the rustler wins 8 /10 times(depends on the corners on the track and the driver)

It's a bit tuff to wheelie geared this high though on 6 cells .But with 7 cell no problem.

the motor is important,

but almost as important are what battery packs you're running

a good quality 6 cell pack is faster than a cheap 7 cell pack
get a new motor ($40-60) and a good battery pack ($40-50) and you'll do fine
