Default YAY! got a sidewinder 4600 today!

Well, i was sick of having my Rusty just sit on the workbench and collect dust (broken ESC)...so I went out and got the sidewinder today! I was planning to get the 5700, but the lhs didn't have it, so i got the 4600. not too different, right?

anyways, i need a little help....

I can't get my pinion off to save my life... i don't know if its the wrench ( the lhs said it fit mine, i lost my original.) or the hex thing on the pinion, but i just cant get it to loosen up a bit..probably the wrench.

I need to pick a connector, traxxas hi-current or deans? or any other high-current connectors you recommend?

the original plan was to get an ener-g 4600 7-cell from boom boom batteries, but of course i have to support the lhs, and time is of the essence (i'd like it up and running by the end of the week). The ones that caught my eye is the venom 4200...is it any good? I think there was also a Losi 4600 pack, and a 5000 pack (can't remember the brand), but give me your battery suggestions.

Gearing is another question (and a subject i have little knowledge about) ...I want a very good top speed, but i'd still like to bash off-road (nothing too bad, just grass, dirt, the average-everyday backyard... ) It's a rustler, if that helps.]

thanks in advance!!

the different between the 5700 and the 4600 is that the 5700 can be run on 2s and the 4600 can be run on 3s

probably made the hex in the pinion or wrench round

i would get lipo
since u got the 4600
you wont see much of a speed increase with nimh

go to radioshack
and grab some GP 3300's

good, cheap batts
the venoms are junk.

I don't have the 4600, i just said it was my original plan but i had kind of changed my mind. And lipo is a little too pricy for me... but would be awesome if i wasn't on a tight budget. unless theres an inexpensive way to go lipo???

You can run both the 4600 and the 5700 on 3s lipo just not 3s with the sidewinder on the 5700 motor.

I think those Losi 4600 NiMH's are looking good... i heard somewhere losi used them to test the speed-t? Again, any suggestions for batts...i dont think lipo is in my budget at the moment.

also, i have a Prophet Sport charger, but it has the tamiya connector...when i choose a connector and buy some, can i just solder the new connector onto the end of the charger and cut the old one off?

Stay away from venoms. They overheat like crazy. Mine outstretched the shrinkwrap, tearing holes at the area of the hump of my 7 cell. They also lose punch after time, but I didn't see too much of a change in run times.

Minimum for nimh: gp 3300's (radioshack USED to carry them, but now they use generic cells [&o] )

Maximum for nimh: ener-g's, the best nimh ya can get.

im not so sure the ener-g's are the best out
they just came out
need to be more proven

i think that elite 4500 and IB 4200 are best

lol ya i thot u meant 4600KV not 4600 mah

hope it runs good!

thanks, and yeah i'm not sure i want the ener-g's even though i've heard praise of them. See, i have a party to go to on saturday and my friend is really into my RC and i was all like "yeah, i'll have it running by saturday i hope so we have something to do at the party..and it'll be brushless!" and i hear Boom Boom Batteries takes awhile to ship. Maybe after they've been proven a little longer (and the price drops lol!) but i'll ask my lhs if they like those Losi 4600's..or see if they have the ones you recommended.

think my 2400mah nicads will handle it? lmao (haha obviously i'm not serious, but think i'll get at least a few mins runtime off them? maybe if i ran them in parallel..hmm...)

radio snackers should get ya through the weekend not to cut on any battery's or the makers but the venoms imo are low quality 24buck radio snackers are a quick fix and a bit better then venom's would be the nicads you have would probably make the truck sit and stutter mostly but that is just what i have read on nicads but i do have a couple snack batteyr packs and they work good imo hope that helps Peace

for connectors
deans for the batt and esc
and bullets for the motor and esc

remember
female on the batt
male on esc
for deans
dont want any shorting out
especially if you get some nice batts =D

try stock gearing
than work your way up

see if your LHS
has a robinson 6 pack pinion gear set
48pitch should be good

low pinion = more accel, less speed, more run time
hi pinion= less accel, more speed, less run time
low spur= less accel, more speed, less run time
hi spur= more accel, less speed, more run time

have fun!

That's not correct. They are still GP3300s. Someone here purchased some and took them apart. Underneath the generic black packaging were GP3300s. I guess that could change at any time down the road, but this was Dec of last year. I bought a couple of packs at that time (generic packaging just like another person here) and the results have been positive. Much better than a Venom 3000 pack I have. There's a post somewhere on this particular forum about those packs.

Can you run the Sidewinder with the VXL motor?

I believe the sidewinder ESC can be run with the VXL motor... here's a quote from the manual...

"Brushless: Other manufacturers: Motors must have Kv same or lower than ours and the motor must be ran within motor manufacturer's specs."

so i think it would work.

quick questions...theres no mounting bracket or anything for it, should i just use some good double-sided tape and put it over the old ESC's mounting bracket?

And since i'm upgrading the pinion gear anyway, and i really just wanna get this thing mounted at least...can i just pop the old pinion gear off with pliers or something (I think the grub screw is stripped or something, nothing's working to get it out with the hex wrench.)

thanks.

took a look at those lipos just now...they're not too pricy!

i kinda liked this one: [link]http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4131[/link]

and this charger: [link]http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3823[/link]

will good Nimh get me up to 45, though? (geared properly) cause it may take me a little bit before i can afford the lipo stuff and i need a speed fix before i get that much $$ again haha.

I'll let you know as soon as i run it, but yeah i'm putting it in my rustler and the owner of the hobby shop pops his head out from the workbench and goes "oooh, that'll give it some "get-up-and-go!"" so i hope its good for speed as well as offroad, which i intend to get more into. If you're more for speed the 5700kv might be more your route, but I think the 4600 will do fine probably. My friend has the evader and i'm gonna talk him into getting this so when we race, i dont leave him completely in the dust.

Double sided tape is fine for mounting the ESC. I recommend going to an auto parts store and getting the 3M brand double sided tape that is used for mounting moldings, bug deflectors, etc. It is used OEM by automotive manufacturers for many badges, and holds up VERY well. It's about $5 for 5 feet.

As far as gear selection goes, go to http://www.castlecreations.com/suppo...ring_chart.pdf , it is the breakdown of recommended gearing for motor/ESC/battery combinations.

If you get a good 7 cell and get in broken in.... I hope you enjoy wheelies. I've got a Sidewinder/5700 in my Rustler and it is a fun little machine.
