with the larger wheels I go a little lower than stock, maybe an 18 to start. of course you should watch your temps.

Don't let it get over 190F and you should be ok. Traxxas says to keep the motor under 200F. I've had mine hit 200 accidently running on 3S lipo but now I try to keep it under 190 as my preferred danger zone.

200F won't damage it......but you certainly don't want to continue running it if it hits temps that high. If it gets that high just shut it down and let it cool off.

Do like Kistner said and start with an 18 tooth pinion and keep an eye on temps.

He's got Stampede sized wheels on it. Stampede XL-5 gearing is 18/90 I believe. I think the Rustler comes with a smaller spur gear, so an 18T pinion may not be small enough.

Look in the Traxxas catalog that came with the Rustler. It has a gearing chart that is quite useful.

stock pinion for a vxl stampede is 19t, I really think you'd be good with an 18t. if you are ordering some i'd get a few (save on shipping). maybe a 16, and 18 and a 20, that gives you a nice range. the 18 should be good, the 20 might be ok too, the 16 would be a nice backup for a 100 degree day, etc. plus you have your stock xl5 pinions which are probably a little bigger.

vxl motors can run almost big tires easily without over heating.

if you dont have a temp gun, 7 seconds with ur finger on the motor is equal to 150ish degrees

id also start with 18/86 then 16/86 then 18/90
