G2 Multiplayer Problems
#1

I am having problems connecting with other players on G2, and thought maybe some of you would know what to do to correct it. When I join a session I can only see the host's plane. The other players names are displayed on the screen, but I cannot see their planes.
When I host, most of the time, I cannot see any other planes. Again the names of the other players will be displayed. When other planes are visible it is choppy, and sometimes the plane will be suspended in air not moving. It often shows the other players paused when they are actually flying.
Whether hosting or joining I get status updates of plane changes or notices of crashes, and chat works. Just can't see the dang planes.
I have a P3 933, GeForce 2 MX video card, windows ME, and a cable connection. I have tried disabling my Norton firewall, and that does not help. Checked the Realflight and Knife Edge web sites and did not find an answer. I emailed Realflight, and am waiting on a response.
Any ideas?

Eric,
I have experienced several of the problems you have mentioned. It's a very rare occasion that everything goes right in multi-player. On the rare occasions it looks great.
I'm on a DSL connection and I would think it would also matter what the others were on. I'm sure the lag on their system and a slow phone line has a lot to do with it. I'm sure on those rare occasions, that it was mostly LAN, DSL or Cable pilots flying with a pretty hot machine.
Sounds like you have more than enough horsepower to run the program.
Let me know if you find anyting out from RF.
Thanks,
-Snaggs

I've had problems with multiplayer and have not been on one for more than 2 minutes nor have I seen all the diferrent players moving about. I'm behind a special firewall and from what I understand G2 does not like that and is real touchy with firewalls and routers.
Emailed KnifeEdge and GreatPlanes but never got an answer and it's been weeks.

Most ISPs that provide DSL, Cable or other forms of High Speed Internet connections also use NAT, which is a way to handle internet addresses (IP). Unfortunately, Microsoft DirectPlay doesn't like that NAT stuff, and that's why we are having trouble with online G2. I have a fairly high-end machine, and get MUCH better results when I connect using a normal, 56k modem connection, than DSL.

I got an email from Great Planes on Dec 12th asking me to run directx diagnostic tool and save the results and email it to them. I did, but have not heard back from them.
I discovered that I had not added RealFlight to the inernet access control on my Norton firewall. Took care of that. I have only tried multiplayer once since then, and everything worked fine. Don't know if that was the problem or not. I had tried disabling the firewall, and that did not help. I'll have to try it some more to see if that took care of the problem.
