darv,
The JPG's are used because the proper resolution BMP's are HUGE. You will need to open the S1 or S2.jpg in a photo editor like PhotoShop and then Save As a 24bit bitmap (BMP).
THere are three key files that you need in your "new" field directory;
S1.BMP, S1a.BMP, and a .WLP file. Most third party downloads come with all files - just need to convert as above. Others, however, do not include a .WLP file. This is no problem. Just copy from an existing field directory and you're off. The files appear to be as follows;
1. The S1.BMP (sometimes S2) is the actual 8160x3060 bitmap of the panorama.
2. S1a.BMP or it's equivalent is the collision file. This allows the airplane to HIT objects or disappear behind them. I have not had the oppurtunity to crack these yet.
3. the .WLP file contains depth, sun location, "no fly zone" and other information relating to positioning - to include the alpha channels of the S1a file. Again, haven't had time to crack different offsets yet.
This is proabably more than you needed to know, but you should now be able to add new scenery in XTR.
