I'll try to stay as factual as I can and not let personal feeling get involved. Here goes:
It has been about three weeks since G3 arrived and I was very disappointed in how the program looked and how the planes !QUOT!felt!QUOT! while flying them. After purchasing a top of the line video card this resolved most of the !QUOT!eye candy!QUOT! issues, but frame rates in some of the !QUOT!more busy!QUOT! scenes are horrible, getting as low as the mid 20's. I do have what most folks would term as a !QUOT!hot!QUOT! PC, with an Athlon XP 3000+, 1 GB RAM, and now have an NVIDIA 6600GT with 128MB ram. I also have adjusted the physics to the highest flight model and turned down the shadows to help, per Realflight technical support personnel. I also run such resource demanding PC games, such as Half Life 2 and Call of Duty, and these games play flawlessly, with outstanding graphics, both utilizing DirectX 9.x technology (the same as G3).
It is my opinion that the G3 code is not as optimized as it could be for DirectX as evidenced by my previous statements.
Today, I received my copy of AFPD on the doorstep. After installing and fiddling with the G3 controller for about ten minutes, all I can say is, !QUOT!Wow! BOOYAH!!QUOT!. G3 doesn't come close to the feel of AFPD. The simulation speed was a little slow, but I boosted this to 120% per suggestion here in this forum, and flew the CAP232 first. It is almost identical to the feel of my H9 80!QUOT! CAP232. At this point, after about an hour of use, I can without hesitation say that AFPD is light years ahead of G3 and will help me with the most difficult of 3D maneuvers. The planes look great and fly awesome. Granted, the field graphics are not quite as good as G3, but I didn't purchase either sim to look at trees. What you have here is a total look and feel that is similar to actually loading up the planes in the trailer and going to the field.
All of this said, I have not had a chance to see or use Reflex XTR, but at this point I don't think I'm going to. I am not knocking XTR however, but am satisfied enough with AFPD know that I'll get my money's worth out of the program. I cannot say the same for G3 unless a major revision is made to the graphics and the physics.
My 2 cents...
