I agree with the above....I started out with Dave Brown's sim and just made the jump to RealFlight G2 this week. For the money, RealFlight can't be beat. Now if I could just figure out how to hold that helicopter in a hover

I dont know the G2 but I use the Reflex and can only recommend it. Especially the realistic ground effects are so helpfull to beginners as I am one. With the appropriate helicopter settings it does fly like the real one I'm using.

I own both G2 and IPACS Aerofly Pro, IMHO AFP is far superior to G2 in terms of modelling Model-behaviour at the borders of the flight-envelope. At higher speeds, both sims feel quite similar. But trying 3D, AFP is quite very different in model-behaviour, the reactions of the model to every single stick-input is just awesome! For my feelings, TRing and Hoovering are a little bit easier in G2, if you put the plane at the correct attitude, in G2 it hoocers almost by its own, AFP models this aspect of the flight-envelope with more accuracy.
Sound and graphics are far better in G2, as well G2 has more "play-value" (in german: Spielwert) by crating a very dense athmosphere of beeing on a real airflield - very nice indeed!

But everyone I know who tried AFP wont´t miss it.
AFP is quite exotic in the US, as is G2 in Europe, just give it a try .

mweathers If you have a couple of hundred dollars the G2 is traffic. If you can't bring your self to spend that much you may find a used one on here for about $150.00. If that is to much you could down load FMS it is good but not as realistic as G2 but it is free. an interface cable for your transmitter might cost $20.00 to $80.00 depending weather you build it your self or buy it built.

I like Dave Browns RCFS 2001. I think it's more realistic then real flight. At least as far as helicopters go.

Reflex at www.reflex-sim.de is by far the nicest physics modelled sim I've ever flown. It's great!

And yes, I also have Real Flight but it's not nearly as nice. The graphics (textures) are nicer in RF, but for physics and overall feeling, Reflex wins hands down!

What computer are you running reflex on. I tried running their demo and the screen is very jerky, gives me a headach. I'm running a Duron 600 with Voodoo3 16Mbyte video card.

Jason, 16 MB isn't enough you need to have a video card of at least 64 MB to make those "jerky" motions go away. Your talking about frame rate here.

I am considering getting a copy of Aerofly Pro. I already have G2 but want something that I can practice glider towing with.

If I buy the interface version, can I still use my G2 transmitter with it?

Hello, I would recommend the Reflex. I have tried three simulators (bought them).
Easyfly - ok. but unrealistic - no ground effects
CSM - DOS based, never run on my computer
REflex - great. I take flight lessons and my trainer uses it on my recommendation (!) now. Claimes this is really realistic.

G2 I have never tried - according to reviews I saw on the web this one is excellent looking too but rather game oriented.

Once you guys try Reflex you won't be happy with anything else. It does such a great job at modelling the physics. It has an awesome feel to it (like reality).

Where can we buy the Reflex Simulator. I downloaded the demo and am impressed.

A big GDAY Mate from down here in Australia. There is a better free flight sim than FMS called PRE-Flight. PRE-Flight was about $75US or something but now its FREEWARE! It has more features lige moving surfaces, retracts and flaps. You can create landscapes and models but there arent as many models or landscapes as FMS available on the web but thats because no one really knows about it! Im sure if it had as much publicity as FMS thare would be a lot more. Go to http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/atv/preflight001.htm there are also instructions for interfaces and interface kits to buy.

If you have trouble getting an interface try this site in Japan http://www.sekiriki.jp/smartpropo/index.html Its called SmartPropo and uses a mono audio cable for tx connection. It is still in its development stages but is looking good. (Ive got XP Pro so not many interfaces work on my system).

Ill start a new thread later on PRE-Flight and SmartPropo.

So you can give your opinions on them.

I've got Aerofly Pro, and I'm pretty impressed.

...yep, AeroFly Professional - realistic hovering practice - the model appears clearer - less eye strain than with G2 - AFP is a very impressive simulator...

...interface version using your transmitter uses the serial port - inteface version with Game Commander (for 2 player mode) - the Game Commander uses the game port...not all new computers have game ports or even serial ports - ask me how i know this...

Although I would have to agree with most of the post's here as far as realism, I can't comfortably say that a flight sim is the only way to learn. Get yourself an instructor and a buddy box. A flightsim will NEVER act out real world situations, as there can be many distractions at the field. e.g. Wind gusts, flyers taking off and landing, flame outs (dead sticks) you and them, multiple aircraft flying, your spotter standing next to you giving you hints/tips/panic attics, those crazee 3D flyers, birds, radio glitches, sun spots, clouds, etc. etc. etc. AND remember, that which scares us only makes us stronger!!!

HOWEVER, flightsims' are great and will help in building hand eye coordination and will help to identify your aircrafts orientation, is it coming at you or going away from you, left or right? While you continue to do your research, check this freebie out. Oh, and you can also build an patch cord to use your transmitter, as long as it has a trainer cord option.

It would be good to have a say "FunFly" mode so you can practice avoiding other planes and flying in the right direction of the circuit etc. Some sims have glare from the sun don't they?

Aerofly Pro rocks! I spent 4 years with G2 and RF original and only 10 minutes with Aerofly Pro to convince me it was better. Physics and graphics are second to none. Make G2 feel like an arcade game.

Exactly. I have looked at the demo unit of G2 at the LHS and found it too easy to fly some of their aircrafts. I could VTOL the harrier and land on my first try!!! I may be good but not that good. I do think that it felt unrealistically easy. I got the AFP and found the physics to be much more realistic. Flying their harrier was much more challenging which is what I was expecting.
