I'm hoping someone can help me with this situation.

I have a G2 upgrade from the original RF that ran OK on my old computer. (Gateway 450, Windows 98)
Now I have a new Dell Dimension 9100, Windows XP Media, 3gig, NVIDIA Ge Force 6800, 1 gig RAM.

I can't even install either one of them much less run without errors.

From all of the posts I've seen on the G3, I think I may want to stay away from it, but don't know what else to do if my G2 doen't work. Is the full G2 still available to buy, or is it only G3 now?

you really should not have any problems with G2. Did you go to the website and update ? With the video card and the system memery you have on your new system you also should have no problems whatsoever running G3. Also if you needed to buy the g2 full version you still could find then being sold here on rcuniverse all the time in the classifieds.

I am not extremly savy with computers but there should be a place were you can change how XP reads the program, you can change the settings to read it in 98 or other settings.
Seems like it is a right click on the icon or program and left click on propertys and at the top of the box there are selctions and in one of those selctions there is the option as to how it can be used, this is were I would try first and see if it will work then.
I imagine others here know exactly what to do, about 9-10 months ago I was reading every night and I have seen cycles of new people and the same questions eventuly come up again and again so I am posative this same problem has been address before but how it was asked or addressed I am not sure.
I hope I am of some help to you, don't give up though, just like any community there are those that know but think others will help and those that try to help but do not know any thing, I am kinda in the middle there

I had a problem running G2 under XP turned ouy to be the video drivers. No problems now.

I ran my g2 in xp when I had it. And quite frankly I don't recall if I had to run it in windows compatability mode as twlyons1 is speaking about. But I had no problem with it at all. And at that time I was running a very old video card the GeForce 2mx.

what errors are you getting?

I know what the original poster is talking about when it comes to the upgrade path. I have trouble loading RF as well till I got down path what it takes to do it (in my case anyway). I always have to do the following for a complete reload :

Note: This is for XP Professional only as that what I have.

1) Install my original RealFlight Deluxe CD (AND DON'T RUN THE PROGRAM !)
2) Install RealFlight G2 (I think I had to follow a KB article on the RealFlight web site to get it to install although it may not be necessary now)
3) Go register the my copy again
4) Download the latest updates
5) Install my add-on CD's (1,2,3)
6) Adjust the graphics settings as needed

I have learned through time to install G2 on another drive besides C:. That way, if I reload Windows or the software, I do not loose my planes, settings, etc., etc.. Course, you could back them up as well if you are running on C: and restore if needed.
