This is the problem with RealFlight G2 (as far as multiplayer is concerned)...

there is no way to set up a dedicated server. this is ridiculous. most multiplayer games have the ability for one machine to be just the dedicated host. BF1942, Counter-Strike, Quake 3 all have the ability to have a machine run as a dedicated host. i would love to have one of my extra machines be a dedicated server, it is on all the time anyway, but no, i can't because it needs a serial to install, and you have to have joystick. if greatplanes put out a standalone, dedicated server, i think that would definately help out the multiplayer portion. come on greatplanes/knifeedge get with the multiplayer program!!!

I'd run a dedicated server. But only if they did one for Linux. I used to run one of the biggest and best Counter-Strike servers. The key is having a STABLE server with a STABLE IP. Can't do either with the current configuration.

Wow, I never thought of that! Some games even GIVE AWAY the dedicated server version of the game. Unreal Tournament 2003 is like this. I would think that would generate sales of G2. Maybe there is just more demand for it than GP or KE thought there would be. Hope they are following this thread.

i really don't think it would have to be linux, that would be asking too much for the lazy people at greatplanes/knifeedge who make this software. win2kpro is extremely stable (for a m$ os), not in years, but at least in months of uptime (sorry Inorris, but i think the stability problems are definately with greatplanes/knifeedge and not with m$ this time). you can take care of a static ip with www.no-ip.com. that will make it easy. with so many people using cable and dsl, there could be many hosts all the time.

Well, in my experience, game servers are highly unstable and crash a lot. Windows was never able to handle a program that used a lot of resources crashing a lot without bringing the whole thing down eventually. In Linux, you just put it in a script to restart it. Plus remote management of the server via SSH was SO much easier. This makes it easier to host at a high bandwidth location. I know they'll never do it so why not dream of the perfect situation?
Also, I'm not sure how G2 does it but no-ip.com is a dynamic DNS, most online games I've seen ask for the IP (they don't do the resolution) so no-ip.com wouldn't work.

Inorris - i understand what you are saying with unix/linux. i too agree that it is the best for stability. i am just wishing for a dedicated server, not perfection (which i know would be impossible for the greatplanes/knifeedge team). sorry to bag on the team but they have some bugs that need to be worked on. i am not familiar with how g2 handles name resoluition, but i do know bf1942, counter-strike and a lot other games will do it. you just type in the name in where it asks for the server ip.
