And truth is just as you mention......... The presence of the photofields adds realism and anything that enhances the realism is worth the cost.

Personally I dislike the photofields.

I find that their static nature detracts from the realism.

If my plane crashes into a tent I would like to see the structure deform, the plane to break apart, etc.

If the plane brushes a tree I would like to see the leaves move, etc. ... bird hits, dust thrown up when lawn darting....

I prefer the 3D fields instead.

Given the graphic complexity and physical accuracy of the latest incarnations of programs such as Doom, Half Life, etc. there is no doubt that the machines are up to the task.

none of the simulators out there do this now to my knowledge. Sure planes break apart but they are the only things that deform. It would be nice if they did model that though. Imagine the destruction you could create lol.

If anyone is interested there are bunch more screenshots of PhoenixRC at the bottom of this page ... including some of the night flying stuff and flying off water!

I have to admit the night flying looks very nice. Hopefully those aren't doctored up screen shots.

hello
i dont know if its me or what. i clearly dont understand as much of coding of the sims as some of the guys here. but in my opinion afpd is a far better sim than g3 i have a p4 3g 1024mb ram gforce 4 diplay card and i can jackup most of the graphics and g3 just looks poor. afpd just impresses more. reflex on the other hand is great its just to expensive for me to go and buy yet another sim. g3 = 3 , afpd = 8 if reflex is a 10.

By the way I've been flying my copy of Phoenix for a couple of weeks now. Been playing mostly with the helis as I bought it for F3C practise and so far I'm a happy camper. AFPD's helis just didn't do it for me but now I'm sorted. It's an awesome sim! Best part is you don't need NASA's main servers to run it either. I've run G3 on my puter and had to turn the graphics down like crazy to get it to run smooth, ended up looking nearly like a slightly touched up Dave Brown sim (Ok that might be taking it a little far but it's a joke). On Phoenix just like AFPD I can turn the graphics all the way up and everything's silk. Looks great too!!!

The 1.03 update is announced on the Phoenix website for those who have it:

New Features:
- Recently-flown aircraft folder when selecting a model.
- User manual now accessible from the Help menu.

Enhancements:
- Improved rotor-blur and propeller effects for all models.
- PhoenixUpdate interface improved for increased usability.
- PhoenixUpdate now tracks installed updates.
- Smoke effects optimised.
- Seaside scenery reworked for improved quality.
- Extra sound effects in competition modes.

Helicopter dynamics:
- More blade-flapping effects in autorotations and manuevres.
- Increased speed in fast forward flight.
- Increased falling speed with gravity.
- More realistic loading during manuevres.
- More accurate pull-outs from fast forward flight/tail-slides.
- Autorotation flares even more accurate.
- Tail wash effects.

Bugs fixed:
- Smoke and balloons stay when Phoenix is forced out of full-screen.

And this was just on RCGroups, apparently the new scenery has masking on long grass as well as trees and bushes:
