hey does anyone know if the interface cable for the fms sim works for the preflight sim? damn me for not doing better research for this stuff. i am getting the pic serial port version for a futaba

Only if you got an interface that makes your Tx look like a standard PC joystick (probably USB based or maybe one that plugs onto a souncard game port).

There is a good summary post at this forum regarding the available R/C sims and interface vendors.
As Wright Flyer mentioned, just make sure that you get a TX-to-gameport or TX-to-USB interface, which will make your transmitter visisble to all Windows applications as another joystick.
There's an on-line manual on configuring such an interface to work with many freeware and commercial simms:
