Default G2 controller and USB adapter question

I have seen several references about using the game port type G2 controller in a USB port. The only things I have been able to determine are: 1. A Radio Shack game port to USB adapter is needed. 2. You need to specify a "joy stick" to use.

IF the right position is selected on the adapter (there are 4 positions) AND the correct "joy stick" is selected the game port type G2 controller will work when plugged into a USB port.

Can anyone provide the correct switch position on the adapter AND which "joy stick" to select ? I have experimented with a variety of switch positions and "joy stick" settings, but have had no luck in getting the RealFlight game port controller to work properly.

I would like to do it with the adapter rather than spend $$$$ for a new controller.

Thanks
