There are a lot of different adapters available, some for as little as $13. You can even build your own for less than that. In my opinion, $49 is far too much to spend for the adapter.

Check this out
I just baught this Futiba transmitter buddy box on E-Bay with the 2 CD's from FMS as you stated but here you get a useable transmitter and all the cables needed for $89.00.
