I got the G2 sim today. Right out of the box I am having problems, the add on vol 1 which came with it will not load, period. I have tried everything, it says loading setup (splash screen) and then it just dies, nothing else happens. I've updated the RFG2 main program and everything else I could think of............Uggg
Anyone?????

I found the "install fix" and got the Add-on pack 1 loaded. I am still having problems though. There seems to be an "end horizon" where the sky and the ground meet..... there is no sky. Its like they forgot to put the sky behind the mountains, etc. Is that normal? The other thing I noticed that on the BLT trainer, I can't even get it to stay in the air for 5 seconds, where as every other plane, excluding helios don't seem to have such drastic flying characteristics. I am already, as I am sure everyone starting out is, very disoriented when you are stationary and watching the plane. But that was another thing I noticed, on rainbow canyon, it seems that my plane will crash and the sky/ground is inverted... its like the computer itself gets disoriented.
Can anyone give me some advice/ feedback?

How did you get the Add On to load? I cannot.
I agree about the BLT. I am hesitant to try and learn on it.
I played with the trim a bit and have it flying, but it seems very unstable on the sim.

Go to the Great Planes website and find the "installfix" patch. Its there if you look at there FAQ stuff. Good luck. I am still wondering about the graphics and why there are big holes in the sky.

Crash,
What is your system configuration (most importantly, what model video card and drivers).
I have been running G2 on a 600Mhz Dell Dimension for over a year and a half with no problems. I just spent serious scratch on a new Dell Dimension 8250 with the Radeon 9700 Pro card and I'm getting the behavior you describe. That is, the sky has no texture (just flat blue) and there's a gap where it meets the far scenery. The graphics settings in G2 seem to have no affect.
The Realflight website mentions problem with the Radeon card, but they don't have good instructions on how to fix it. They just say, go the to the ATI site and download "alternate" drivers. Whatever that means. I've written to ATI (because I can't get the new drivers to install, get iKernel.exe can't load error) and GreatPlanes to get them to specify specific drivers that will work.

Dell Dimension 733mHz with an NVIDIA Geforce 256 using driver v. 2.3.1.1. The PC has 356 of RRAM and a bus clock of 133 megahertz. It really shouldn't be a problem for me. If anyone can shed light, let me know.

Hey Fishstyx:
Do you have the Radeon 9700 or the All In Wonder 9700.... the drivers could be different.
Although I have never had a problem installing the ATI drivers, it can be a pain in the *****, tedious procedure.
When you Download Drivers, make sure you follow the instructions carefully. Also, make sure you check out the "Additional Software" link on the bottom-left.
BTW - What OS are you running?

I am running windows 2000. I have really had a hgard time with the multiplayer, it totally locks up G2. I am doing a full reboot just to get out of it. That should not be happening in the WIN2000 environment.

ufdfireman,
It's the Radeon 9700 Pro. I managed to get the driver installed. After doing some research on the Web I found that the iKernel error that was preventing me from installing the drivers was related to InstallShield. I fixed that problem and was able to install the CATALYST 3.4 driver package and control panel.
No dice, it didn't fix the problem. I also upgraded to the most recent version of G2. I tried installing the CATALYST 3.2 drivers, same behavior. I've tried changing the resolution and color depth, graphics settings in G2, everything I can think of, but nothing works.
The sky is flat blue which makes it impossible to judge movement when there are no ground objects on the screen.

So far the Realflight tech folks have been very helpful. They seem to be working the issue. Hopefully they will provide a patch. Apparently my "missing sky" issue has already been documented. They were not sure what could be causing the multplayer exit lockup.

I had similar problems with G2. Try upgrading your Direct-x. If you go to the main G2 menu, there should be a box there to click on itand it will take you to a page to download/upgrade your software. Also, there is an icon there, I can't remember exactly what it's called, but you can test various things to see if your video cards are causing the problem or what. I'm at work right now (SHHHHH) or I'd tell you what it was for sure. Lemme check when I get home and see if I can find what I'm looking for and describe it better. G2 gave me fits for a long time, but finally it's working great for me and I am beginning to enjoy it!

Well, I have the latest DirectX 9. I don't know if I can roll back to 8.
I won't be "upgrading" my video card as it is an expensive top-of-the-line card and I've only had it 3 weeks now.
I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstalling G2, add-ons, patches, etc... and see if that helps.
The comment about RF tech support being less than helpful is an accurate one. After wading through the worthless "autoresponder" I had three messages back and forth regarding my problem. I'm not sure I was actually communicating with a human as it seemed like they never read the description of my problem. All I received was the type of guidance I can find in a FAQ (Update RF to latest version, Update DirectX, Blah Blah).
After sending the 4th message explaining that they weren't answering my simple question, What SPECIFIC version of Radeon drivers do they recommend. I can't get an answer (not even another useless response). Even though they state there is a problem with the Radeon, they don't give the version number of a driver that works. Just "Select alternate driver from ATI". *** does that mean.
My frustration level is mounting. For $200 one should be able to get a simple answer like this.

From: Minot, ND,
Open your G2 control panel and click on the Tech support icon. This will bring up a new menu and will show all of your sytem staus. In the upper right hand corner, there is box marked DX with 4 options beneath it "Billboard, CHATPEER, Sound, and Joystick." Click on these individually and it will run a short "test program" of each one and may identify which part of the system is causing you problems. From there, I'd say you will probably have to relaod your drivers. I tried the uninstall/ reinstall program options several times and it only fixed my problems temporarily. Finally, I reloaded Direct x, updated to the newest version of G2 from the website, had to reload my video/ sound/gaming options drivers and crossed my fingers. After a reboot, everything seemed to work (and has been working for me for about two weeks now). Maybe this will solve your problem, or at least help. Good Luck! Rich

Ok, I got it mostly fixed. Updating the Radeon drivers and to the latest RF patch fixed most of the graphics problems. The flat blue sky problem only exists with the airports that came with Add-ons 3. The others are fine. So, I simply don't use the broken airports.

For all having problems with holes in the sky try the following, for those with ATI cards try updating RealFlight to version 2.00.637 which is the last version, once you have the update start RF and go to options and select "Graphics Optimization" and click on "Use Alternate Fog" ATI cards don't render fog or properly render it under Direct X in RF. For those Nvidia based chipset you should have no problems if you're running the latest drivers for the card, please don't make the mistake of downloading the drivers meant for the 5800-5900 cards, these drivers won't work on the earlier version of the chipsets.

Say Scott for the Geforce that's normal, there my be some who would need to disable Vertex Hardware processing but again the Nvidia based cards normal can run full bore as long as you have the latest drivers. have you tried any of your cards advanced features? ex; AA or AF

I run both 4X with all Realflight settings to the max at 1024X768 32bit 75Mhz.
Beautiful! Keeps torque-rolling frame rates in the 30s with an old homebuilt PIII 600EB (Coppermine) w/512Mb PC133.
