I hate G4.5, too many bugs and a computer and graphics card required to make it look worth money is a too expensive, but G4 was great. I hate FS-one too few aircraft and complicated setup of transmitter and aircraft parameters.
I now use FMS and Aerofly Pro Deluxe. I still think FMS is the best for begginers to teach orientation and light fingers.

Most computers with DX9 or DX10 compatible hardware run with G4.5 just fine.

dbcisco attempted to run G4 with an integrated "laptop" type display which is not suitable for most games, let alone simulation software.

He is equating not having adecuate hardware with "bugs" in the program, which is incorrect.

If you have a DX9 compatible machine, and/or one of a more recent vintige ( e.g. within the last 3-4 years ) you'll do fine.

G4.5 and Aerofly Deluxe Pro seem to have the best flight models.

AFDP features planes we rarely see here, as they are mostly European RC aircraft.
It also does not have all of the advanced features of G4.5 nor the advanced physics editing etc.

FSOne WAS a decent enough "entry level" RC simulator, but there have been no updates in a long time, nor any support from the developers. They may no longer be around.

Neither AFDP nor FSOne feature advanced and extensive 3D airfields which G4/G5 does, though both have somewhat rudimentary ones, that at one time were considered state of the art.

In 3D airfields your "viewpoint" or your virtual pilot can move through a 3D rendered world. Objects interact, etc.

If you plane hits a tree, leaves fall off realistically. If your plane noses over you may see grass clippings flying from the tips of the prop, etc... all things that add greatly to the "suspension of disbelief" that puts you "IN" the sim.

All of this requires the CPU processing power of a decent computer with an adecuate video adaptor.

And as with all software, yesterday's associated "start of the art" hardware requirements, become todays, commodity base level hardware found on the marjority of systems... something that happened with G4.

I was using an ATI 9600 series video card (well above the minimum requirements). It was not laptop nor integrated. Please get your facts straight. I was not the only one with problems either. All anyone has to do is go to knifeegde forums and see all the problems including about a dozen bug fix patches in six months.
Please stop posting false information about me (at least).

I am well aware of your posts and history on the KE forums as well as those on RCG.

I would also refer anyone to the same forums to see what you posted, and what actually transpired, then judge for themselves.

Still haven't admitted that you were wrong about my computer and video. An apology would be nice.

The following is from knifeedge forums where opjose was previously informed that I had a video card, not integrated nor laptop system.:

response from opjose to dbcisco:
You - KNOW - it will not as "Integrated" chipsets are explicitly NOT supported, so why go there?...

Reply from dbcisco:

.... My current one's video card handles WOW beautifully but not G4.5 so, no, I don't "trust" that my next card will work with G4.5 I simply believe it should.

One thing to consider as dbcisco and opjose have brought up is how "good" the software performs "out of the box". RealFlight has had some issues with G4.5.

Directly from the KnifeEdge Software site:

10/28/2008 RealFlight G4.5 goes Public:

RealFlight G4.5 adds a number of often requested features, including:
- New aircraft
- New airports
- Improved ground handling with realistic sounds and ground terrain
- Improved aircraft detail using normal mapping
- New multiplayer with live voice chat and the ability to block other users
- Depth of field feature keeping your aircraft the visual focal point
- Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced physics settings with unlimited custom settings
- Many new user-interface graphics and features

10/31/2008 RealFlight G4.50.024 available;

FIXED BUGS:
Fixed a crash bug related to collisions
Splash sounds do not cause a crash when too many other sounds are playing simultaneously
The heli rotor speed governor allows a faster spoolup for some throttle curves, and is more consistent on resets
Electronics components and servos reset properly when the aircraft is reset
Smoke servos do not get stuck on
Quick Select airport selection gadget tab is disabled during multiplayer
Disabling normal maps reduces the amount of RAM used
Helicopter rotor blades take their strength modifier into account when determining when to break off
Aircraft parts that break off are affected by the wind
Scrape sounds stop playing when the airport is changed
KEX Import Wizard does a better job auto-detecting the type of object being imported
Imported windsock objects display properly
Pylon Racing event ends after being completed successfully in single player mode

along with some other “upgrades†and non-bug fixes.

11/03/2008 RealFlight G4.50.025 available;

FIXED BUGS:
(Changes marked with an asterisk are new in .025 vs. .024
Fixed a crash bug related to collisions
Splash sounds do not cause a crash when too many other sounds are playing simultaneously
*Fixed two potential crash bugs related to a large number of sounds playing simultaneouslyThe heli rotor speed governor allows a faster spoolup for some throttle curves, and is more consistent on resets
Electronics components and servos reset properly when the aircraft is reset
Smoke servos do not get stuck on
Quick Select airport selection gadget tab is disabled during multiplayer
Disabling normal maps reduces the amount of RAM used

Scrape sounds stop playing when the airport is changed
KEX Import Wizard does a better job auto-detecting the type of object being imported

Pylon Racing event ends after being completed successfully in single player mode

And it continued;

12/17/2008 RealFlight G4.50.031 available

12/17/2008 RealFlight G4.50.032 available

12/19/2008 RealFlight G4.50.033 available

01/09/2009 RealFlight G4.50.035 available

01/13/2009 RealFlight G4.50.036 available

02/20/2009 RealFlight G4.50.038 available

03/16/2009 RealFlight G4.50.043 available for testing

03/25/2009 RealFlight G4.50.045 available for testing

04/07/2009 RealFlight G4.50.046 available for testing

04/08/2009 RealFlight G4.50.047 available for testing

04/10/2009 RealFlight G4.50.048 available for testing

04/17/2009 RealFlight G4.50.049 available for testing

04/21/2009 RealFlight G4.50.050 available for testing

If my math is correct that's a total of 15 version upgrades designed primarily to correct “bugs" over a six month period.

I think we can all make our own determination as to whether or not G4.5 was a “buggy†piece of software.

Although I do think it’s commendable that the issues were corrected as quickly as they were.

Please don't misunderstand my comments ... RealFlight G4.5 had issues and people need to be aware of that. But, comparing FSOne with RealFlight? In my book there's no comparison, RealFlight wins hands down! But then it's twice the cost of FSOne ... RealFlight as also taken a huge step changing their upgrade policy to allow owners of previous versions to upgrade for a minimal cost and not have to buy a whole new program. (By the way G5 will be out in a few short weeks.)

Real Flight G4.5 or FS ONE poll

If you had a choice between FS ONE or RFG4.5 which one would you opt for and why ?
We've gotten some pretty thorough reasons from the usual crowd. Anybody else want to tell which they like and why?

Which one would you buy and why, is the topic.

I guess I have an opinion but no experience with actual flying. I got interested in RC this past year or so and decided to buy a Simulator to find out if I could actually fly it because of some medical problems that caused me to loose a little of my coordination. I found out that I can do it quite well so now I'll concentrate on flying the sim over the winter months then buy a plane and start the real thing. I decided that the G4.5 would be worth the money if it worked as advertised. One of the reasons for buying the G4.5 was that Dell told me it would work with my PC. I've watched a lot of RC airshows during this past year and the sim is quite realistic. I've learned a lot about flying with it, getting more comfortable with it all the time. I started with the NextStar then started flying the T-28 most of the time. This includes landings, loops, rolls and spin recoveries. I know for a fact that it resembles full scale flying. The G4.5 is all that I wanted from a sim.

Hi,
I bought RF 4.5 one year ago and never got any troubles. It just runs fine on my computer and reached my expectation.
Of course, you need to have a "gaming" pc to run it properly...
The only thing that i don't like about RF is the price.
I'm looking forward the version 5 of RF.
I don't have any opinion about FS One as I never tried it.

I own all 3 (Realflight G4 upgraded to 4.5, AFP Deluxe, FS one). AFP Deluxe was my first and the flight model and physics are very good. It's main failing is the POV makes it nearly impossible to tell where you are in relation to the runway until the ground comes into view just before touchdown. This makes the sim virtually useless when trying to teach someone to land. I bought FS One on sale to see if it was any better in this regard and was just very disappointed in the product as a whole. I then flew G4 at a store display and immediately bought a copy. It takes decent hardware to run it...but that's the price you pay for cutting edge graphics and high frame rates. Overall I don't think there is any comparison. Get adecent machine with 2+GH processor, 2+ G ram and stick a GeForce 9400 or better in it and you're good to go. BTW, I just picked up another desktop with better specs than those for $249 because retailers are blowing out their Vista machines in preparation for Windows 7. Check around - there are some great deals out there.

2PUPS

What a difference a month makes !

At Ihobby Horizon announced the departure of FS One and the introduction of their distribution of Phoenix 2.5 with their models E-flite etc. on the model menu.

They were very quick to also make certain that everyone knew that they would continue to support FS One.

Many had thought the FS One was on its way out with the discontinuance of the Hangar Pack 1, RF coupler etc.
There is no doubt now.
