Is it good to learn on?

I just picked up a copy of this in the swapshop. I've been interested in it for a while - I'm the only flight instructor at our field, and I'd like to have something cheap I can loan to students until they get their own sim.

I haven't received it yet. I did read the archives of the Cockpit Master list - here are some excerpts.

*Some* of the aircraft modeled are quite true-to-life.
Graphics are pretty good.
CM tech support leaves something to be desired.
Due to contractual issues, none of the Multiplex planes mentioned in the ads are supplied with the sim.
There are bugs with the software's support of transmitters under Win 2000 and XP. It doesn't sound like those bugs will be fixed anytime soon.

I've purchased cockpit master backyard edition. Let me say the graphics are incredible and a lot of thought went in to it. It's still a lot of fun to tool around in it.

I have a voodoo3 graphics card and I feel that I need at least a Geforce 3 card. When the graphics are intense my display rates go down to 15 or 16 frames per second a little choppy.

I forgot to mention that I have a duron 650 processor also. The main lag is my video card.

That being said it in no way compares to my Dave Brown Simstar flight simulator as far as flight response goes. Also I am learning to fly a helicopter using the Dave Brown simulator cannot do that with Cockpit master.

I think you could totoally learn to fly an airplane on the Dave Brown Simulator and feel comftable doing it. While you would learn the basic controls with Cockpit master it's speed would not quite prepare you for the real thing. The price of thirty dollars makes Cockpitmaster very attractive though.

But considering for 129.00 for theDave Brown simulator you get a control box and a heli sim and a more real flight response I would still go with the Dave Brown flight sim first, then add Cockpit master for kicks.

Have you used Real flight G2? If so how does Dave Brown compare to G2? Anyone else have experience with G2 and Dave Brown?

I have Dave Brown and G2. I have had Dave Brown since it was a floppy disk and the last version I upgraded to was CD. DB is not bad but there is no comparison between it and G2 for graphics and realism G2 is it! However G2 is not perfect but is the best I have seen. I did use the old RC aerochopper once or twice also. I have not seen any of the Euro one's. So my opinion only.

CockpitMaster was developed several years ago and it hasn't changed a bit since. While CockpitMaster was among the best simulators several years ago, it's definitely inferior to contemporary sims. (There was a comparison of popular R/C simulators in, if I remember right, Backyard Flyer magazine, and they came to a similar conclusion.) The lack of any support for this sim is caused, according to rumors, by the developer of the sim leaving the company, which owns CP.

I'd say, CocpitMaster and CockpitMaster Backyard Edition are on par with good freeware simulators like FMS. The good news is that CM can use the same inexpensive "FMS serial PIC" interfaces, which use FMS data exchange protocol. Serial PIC interfaces are sold by many wendors for $15...20.
