FMS and RC Desk Pilot are both good. I don't know which is better.

FMS has TONS of aircraft available. RC Desk Pilot - not as many, but some folks like Gary Gunnerson are working to fill that gap. RC Desk Pilot uses a 3D world - much like the "world" landscape in FMS.
FMS development stopped several years ago I believe. RC Desk Pilot is undergoing active development and improvement. The physics in RC Desk Pilot are noticeably better than FMS. RCDP has moving control surfaces and much more realistic ground handling. It also has something called "dynamic scenery" (moving trees, flying birds, and other things that are active) which some of the high end simulators don't even have. Just eye candy, but nice nevertheless. There is also a mode which uses the colored 3D glasses. Haven't tried it myself, but it sounds interesting. The sound needs work, FMS is better in that department.
Don't expect RCDP to have the realistic physics of the high-end simulators - remember it's FREE. I personally think it's a better simulator overall compared to FMS, and it promises to get even better, while FMS appears to be a dead-end.

I agree - RCDP is actually an excellent simulator and I find is very feature rich.
FMS is good but outdated. As RCDP is current, problems can be fixed now, and physics, graphics, etc, are much better. The developer is a RCU user and is very helpful - check out the RCDP thread on this forum.

Hope this helps!
