RE: wich sim

The trainer port on your radio connects to the serial adaptor for your PC. Depending on which Radio you have you may or may not need an adaptor. The radio also needs to be FM , radio's and PPM don;t work (PPM will work in FM mode from my understanding).

GarMan,
Mupchu is right but I also suggest you to ask directly to support team of Afp, RealFlight and Reflex.
The url for Aft forum is: http://www.ipacs.de/cgi-bin/ultimate...4;DaysPrune=20
The url for RealFlight is: http://www.gpsoftware.com/
The url for Reflex is: http://www.reflex-sim.dyndns.org/ref...hp?language=en
Hope this can help you.

@Garman: Your Futaba radio should have a 6-pin DIN round connector at the back which is the same as used in Hitec radios. All the sims either come with an adapter or connector to get the signal from the radio. Pretty easy stuff, that radio will not produce any problem.

RE: wich sim

I downloaded a free flight simulater from: http://www.dubai*********.org/free_r...e_download.htm It is about 6MB. It's called Flying-Model-Simulator FMS 2.0 Beta 7. Has anyone else tried this one? I have crashed many times, but I'm getting better. How close to the real thing is this? It does not allow me to hook up my radio transmiiter to do the controlling. I would think using my controller is important. Isn't it? If I press the wrong thing, my plane will crash. If I am used to a keyboard, won't I get confused with the sticks when I switch to the radio? I also downloaded the trial version of RealFlight. I don't think it lets me use a keyboard or mouse. I guess I will have to get my joystick out of the closet or order the radio adapter. I only have 15 days on the trial. The trial will expire before I can get the adapter. Oh well...

Thank you guys for getting this thing about adapting my controller to work on my computer straight. Since I have a trainer jack on the back, all I have to do is get the cord that runs from the controller to the serial port on my computer. If I want it to connect to the USB port, then I have to get an adapter from serial to USB also. I'm sure that there is a driver for the adapter. RealFlight has a fake radio that just works with the sim and it lets you plug your radio in to that. I don't see what the advantage of that fake radio is. Maybe if you had a radio that would not plug into the computer, then you could use the fake one with the software. Do you guys have any suggetions on where I should buy the adapter and software? Maybe there is somewhere on the internet that has great prices. Remember That I am new and know nothing but my local hobby store where thereis a premium price for everything.

What is PPM?

GarMan,

Here is my suggestion and take it for what it's worth. Buy Aerofly Pro, Reflex, or Realflight don't even bother messing with the "free" sims and interfaces out there. FMS is not very realistic, although it is better than nothing. Using just a keyboard is not going to be much help, because one of the biggest problems beginners have is jaming the sticks too hard. I am not sure you would be confused goign from keyboard to sticks, but it definetly will not prepare you if you are just using a keyboard. You can buy an adaptor that will cost about $20-30 depending on which radio you have. There are several people that sell the adaptor on ebay usually bundled with a copy of FMS or some other "free" simulator.

On a budget I can relate to that I would definetly get that rather than have nothing to practice with. FMS cannot hold a candle to any of the other sims though, even realflight (which i personally don;t like much at all). The cheapest of the bunch is currently Aerofly Pro (about $140 shipped), it is also one of the better of the three depending on who you talk to. In the long run I suggest spending money on a quality sim that can actually help you out rather than a cheap one if you can afford it. IF you try and ask what the best sim is on these forums expect different answers, but i think most people would agree you won;t go wrong with AFP, Reflex or realflight.

I would suggest that you hang at the local field and look into flight lessons (reguardless of which sim you choose). Nothing beats a hands on instructor to help you through things, although a sim is very very helpful. If you are buying an adaptor just look on ebay and there should be something there. As for the other sims, www.aeroflypro.com , www.towerhobbies.com , www.fxaeromodels.com , you'll probably want to send "WSN" an IM to find out where reflex XTR is being sold now . . . i believe there is a transition going on there.

PPM is a different type of signal just like AM, or FM. You will only find PPM on high-end radios, it has some neat features to it such as a safety setting (servo's default to a certain setting if there is interferance). If you are new and just getting into it, don;t bother with PPM.

I belive you mean PCM as you can't set any safety servo settings on PPM.

Pretty sure PPM has a failsafe mode it works different from PCM, but it does have some setting for fail safe.
