card

I have a chaintech g-4/440 (with tv out) and 64 meg it runs beautifully. I think the g-force 3s are faster than the 4/440, so they would work great, too. I had a 32 meg card before and it stuttered a few times if things got to intense. I'd definately go with 64 meg min. They are all available online for under a $100. I'd get the latest detonator drivers (free online) they make the g-force cards really perform.

video card for Real-Flight???

I am running a geforce 2 mx400 and can get 50fps with most of the extras turned off. K6-2 processor at 500mhz 196 meg ram

These cards are cheap now. I bought last year.

g card

Hey Fred, do you have the latest detonator drivers? If not, you should get them. When I got my chainforce I had to turn off some extras, even w/ 1800+ and g4/mx44o/64. I figured a new card would have better drivers than a generic detonator driver. I installed the detonator drivers and saw a huge improvement. I can run all the extras and never a stutter. They are free online.

video card for Real-Flight???

Geforce4 TI 4600 128MB, or if you don't want to spend $210.00
Geforce4 MX440 128Mb, if $81.00 is still to much
Geforec4, MX420 64MB, $53.00, too steep?
GEFORCE2 MX200 64MB $38.00, almost getting useless now!
That's about it, can't get much cheaper than that, and still be compatable.

How does the Radeon 8500 work with G2?

video card for Real-Flight???

Thanks for all the info. the computer will come this week and I'll pick up a video ard. I'll post how it runs and what card I get.

FYI. I got a IBM- Plll, 500Mz computer for $90 on ebay. THere are a lot of corporate lease return computers on ebay. These are great deals in you need a computer. they are only 2 years old.
The reason they are cheap is they come with no operating system or software. Look for ones sold by Techsmart, they come with a 30 day guarentee.

3dfx VooDoo3 card for RealFlight G2?

Hi, I'm getting my hubby the G2 for Christmas. He has Real Flight Deluxe from 2 years ago. My question is whether or not my voodoo3 card will be 'enough' for the G2. I saw that the voodoo1 and 2 cards were not compatible. Anyone know?

If I need to get a new video card, who can I call, or how can I find out which one will work best?

My pc is 2 years old, has AMD 598 Mhz processor, plenty of HD space, and 256 mg RAM.

I looked at pricewatch.com and there are so many video cards there that I'm confused. One ad says

GeForce4 TI4400 128MB AGP DDR w/ TV out, VIVO and DVI. RETAIL BOX, FREE nVIDIA LOGO! for $191

Another says - NVIDIA Geforce4 Ti 4400 , TV-Out. MSI TI4400 with 128MB DDR Memory - for $191.65

Are these the same? I'm sorry to post such a long question (esp. under my husband's logon name) but, I figured someone here would know. Hopefully he won't be checking this forum!

Thanks for your input and help. - T2LE

video card for Real-Flight???

I am not sure if the sim will or will not work on the Voodoo3 card. I would go ahead back to price watch and doa search for these models.

Since he has the V3 card, you might not want to go lower, maybe get the GeForce4 with 128 mb RAM , The only game that this doesn't help is Tribes, other then that one, It helps all of the games tha I have seen.

Is that the GeForce4 with128 mb RAM - TI-4600 or MX440??? And can you tell me what the difference would be between these 2 cards? Or am I splitting hairs?

Thanks for your quick response!

The MX440 should be fine for your system. Going all the way for the highest end card may not be worth it due to the speed of your system.

Weatherman- I have a 8500dv card and works fine. Avg-50fps with deatail all on. The only problem Ive come across is the fog. I cant leave fog on otherwise I see a white screen and a faint outline of aircraft.

For serious graphics card comparison you should read reviews at PC-hardware sites, like www.tomshardware.com.

Here's a page from their 7-month old (it was before the introduction of the latest ATI chips) video card comparison:
http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic...charts-01.html

As you can see, GeForce 4 MX cards are slower than "full" GeForce 3 cards and even slower (!) than venerable GeForce 2 Ultra cards.

The amount of video memory, 32 vs. 64 vs. 128, doesn't really matter for todays applications. I don't think that it matters for RealFlight G2--I'm running it on two identical machines, one of which has 32MB and another 64MB video RAM, and there's no difference in the frame rate!

Just my .02 worth...

video card for Real-Flight???

Is anyone running a PCI bus video card?
Wondering if there is a performance difference between the PCI or AGP cards of the same type when running G2.

I have a AGP slot but can't find a card that has the connector in the right place to line up with the hole in my case.

PCI cards run a little different. For G2 I think they would still be fine.

onrecess 12-12-2002 12:45 PM

line up

I thought all AGP and PCI cards looked alike? They all have the little metal blade that fills the slot on the back of the case. You know, it i about 1/2" by 4, with one end bent over andthe other slotted. Do you have some kind of special case? You know the blanked off slots have covers that come off, right? Having a AGP slot that doesn't line up with the case doesn't make any sense.

AGP slot problem

Let me clarify. Theproblem is not with the slot lining up.
I have an IBM 300pl, this was a machine designed for business.
The mother board has video built in. There is an AGP connector on the board. The problem is the APG connector is lined up with a square hole in the case that is meant for the monitor connector. My guess is there was an IBM board designed for it with the connector in the right place. It needs to be on the top of the egde that goes toward the case opening.
I found one board that would fit, but it is a TNT2 board and I read on the Realflightt board those older video boards are not recommended.
I'll call Realflight tech support and post their answer.

From looking at the pics of that machine on the web, it appears to be a desktop case. I have not messed with one of them since my dads 486 computer. That is in my opinion, where the problem is. Most of todays hardware is made for tower style cases.

Just got off the phone with Realflight tech support.
(the woman I talked with was very knowledgeable and helpfull)

She said you can run with a PCI type card with no problem.
Of coarse the AGP cards will probably have better performance however there are many factors that will determine your finally frame rate output. ie. if you turn on a lot of extras.

If you do not have a 250watt PS or higher, she recommended not to use the GeForce 4 cards, rather go with a GeForce 2.

As a matter of fact, she told me she was running a PCI ,
GeForce 2 card in her computer at home and Realflight runs fine.

Most desktops take a regular card. they just go in flat.

I'm going to get a computer primarily to run G2. Used. I keep running into a phrase "onboard video". Which I assume means it has a built in video card and a regular video card cannot be added. Is this the AGP vs PCI thing discussed above. Would it mean I couldn't use an AGP card but I could run a PCI card?

Thanks, Balin

Most of todays motherboards, even with onboard video, have an AGP slot. All you do is disable the onboard video before you install the vid card
