Fms Rocks!!!

I just got a copy of FMS.... I never thought a flight sim would be sooo much fun!! So easy to setup.... I tried using the keyboard, but quickly learned that it's nothing like a radio. I got a PIC interface cable and hooked up my own radio!! What a balst!! I was doing tail touchs after about 1 hour and knife edge loops and all kinds of fun stuff that I haven't tried with my real rc ailplanes....

I really recommend this SIM....

I am using the controller from FRG2. I read that you cannot do this, but I think they said it for legal reasons.

FMS simulator with Dave Brown box

My Dave Brown controller that I got for Daves first simulator works fine on my windows xp computer with FMS. I have the latest Dave Brown simulator and very rarely use it since I got FMS. I have ordered the serial interface kit from New Zealand. I will probably never use the DB sim again. I will sell it cheap

Dave Brown & FMS with Win NT

:D I have tried the FMS Simulator with my Old Dave Brown box. It works great. The new version 2.0 v.7 need about a P4 to make it really any fun. I have been flying the Kyosho F-86 saber jet and it really flies just like the real RC plane.

FMS SIMULATOR

Thanks guys for the reply. I have the old Dave B. sim. It never did have sound. It seemed like it sure lacked graphics. The only thing I liked was the helecopter. Then I got to see Real Flight and the planes looked like our model ones we fly. I was thinking about getting the add on for Dave B. Sim, I think that was on a disc instead of a floppy. Something tells me not to. May try the download for FMS. Is it better to put idownload on floppy disks?? Do not know much about downloads. Will a pentium 11 class computor run this ok/ Thanks Captin John

download

Download FMS to your hard disk. Don't fiddle with a floppy. You will need to have a speed of 300 MHZ in order to run FMS with its graphics. Be sure to go into controls and map the channels to the box. My FMS came with the aileron on the throttle.

I have access to Real Flight G2 thru the club I belong to and I have RFCS2001. For realism I think FMS beats them all. It might not be best for a beginer though. But then I haven't downloaded all of the models available.

Sorry to disappoint you but I don't own a CD burner.
BTW just what do these physics calcs do for you? You don't have to hold back in your explaination. I am an electrical engineer and have spent the last 10 years writing software. I never wrote a 6DOF simulator though. I have several friends that have so let us know what you are talking about.
I am just stating my opinion on my observations.
I think you are smarting because you paid $200 and there is something that is just as good for the purpose for free

IMHO, (I hold MS in Aerospace Engineering and Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics, nor I'm a Software Developer for a major CAD company) both FMS and RF G2 have rather poor flight model.
I haven't noticed any significant advantage of G2 when it comes to flight realism. :(
(I'm talking about planes--people say helies are much better in G2, but I know nothing about choppers.)

What seems to be a strong selling point of G2, is its stunning visual quality. It looks so cool--control surfaces are moving, exhaust is slowly disappearing in the sky, etc.

Just my $.02 worth...

throttle and rudder ( the fix )

In FMS after you install it. You need to change the channel assignments. This is for the messgae about the throttle and rudder question.

I have a made a help page for the install.. If you would like to see it click the link below.

To 12fly
My name is Richard H. Kelly and I live in Mesa Az. My resume is posted on the internet at CE.WEEKLY.COM # kr010431. I am available for software consulting begining at $50/hr. I haven't had many contracts lately due to the poor economy. I've had to lower my price. If you would care to drop by I will show you my computer. Its a 900MHZ Celeron with a 19" monitor. I have no need for a CD burner because I do not sell software to the public. I have the 19" monitor so that I can better fly simulators. One of the things experience tells you is that you don't have to have the most expensive equipment to write and operate software.
BTW you didn't answer my question. What does physic calcs do for you?

12fly,
Nice piece of detective work (how much time have you spent searching?). You are, probably, just another FMS "seller" upset about abundance of low-quality FMS cables on eBay...

Regarding FMS cables "I" used to offer on eBay. They were all made by my friends in the Ukraine (really high quality, lots of good modeling stuff is made there), and my wife was selling these cables under my name. All the profit went to my friends - $100 a months provides a decent living in that poor country. :(

Regarding my credentials. I hold MS in Aerospace, PhD in Solid Mechanics and another PhD in Mechanical Engineering, a dozen publications in scientific magazins, etc. If you have nothing better to do, you can look at my rather outdated home page here:
http://home.stny.rr.com/sergeev/

Good luck "investigating". You may also go to FMS official forum and reveal me there. I've been posting a lot of my findings on FMS cables there.

Boris

Yes, seriously!

12fly,
It may be hard for you to imagine, but it's true. I'm helping my friends in the Ukraine. I still remember how it feels when you don't have enough cash to buy your child a fruit...
And I'll find a way to pay my taxes in full. I'm an American citizen and I'm proud of it. Though it may be hard for you to imagine too.

Guys,

This isn't a forum for posting commercial sites selling cables. I have no problem with you talking about the cable you bought or where you bought it but I really don't want commercial advertising here. If you have a question about cables that someone is talking about please email the author.

It's a really fine line weather a post is commercial or not and I don't want to have to make that decision. I'd appreciate it if you could kind of self police yourselves and save me the trouble of editing or deleting posts if I feel it is necessary.

I have the luxury of being pretty much a total dullard about RC flight sims (and about everything else in RC flight : -( ) and therefore have no pre-concieved notions or opinionated/emotional baggage which would serve to make me take sides in some "my gear and opinions rule, and yours are garbage" type discussion. That said , it is abundantly clear to me that the "12" something or other guy is whistling Dixie, and "Bluesky" could write the book (and probably has!) on a whole range of technical issues that most of the rest of us barely know exist. I say Bravo!, Bluesky, and keep up the good work!Kudos also, to you for the work and support you are providing to your friends in the Ukraine. I can only imagine the tough time they are having over there. Glen Priest

Well, KEEEERRRAAAAAPPPP! I just laboriously typed out a message to you and evidently lost it! I HAVE had several exchanges with Matt Clement at OSU about getting a set of his cables, and am looking for something which will run Cockpit Master as well as FMS.
I DID have a burr under my saddle blanket about some comments in the "FMS Rocks!" thread by "12 Fly" or something directed to "BlueSky" who has two earned PHD's as well as undergrad and Master's degrees in some very arcane (to ME, but then I know notheeeeng! :- )) engineering areas, as well as teaching and research experience both round the US and in Russia.
It seemed to me the 12 guy was making unseemly personal attacks on "BlueSky", and that the latter was one very classy person. I'm sure he didn't need MY puny defense, but it seemed right to say something. I don't know how the two threads got tangled, but they evidently did. Sorry! Glen Priest

Interface cable

To get this thread back on track, I have a parallel interface cable that worked just fine on my old computer (win95, 233 p1, 16MB vid card), but I does not work on the new one. My new computer has XP, does it not support the parallel port interface? Will a serial interface work, and my apologies for asking, Mr. Moderator, does anyone know where I can get a serial interface that will definitely work with XP?

bluesky123 02-23-2002 09:40 PM

Fms Rocks!!!

airwethead,

The problem with parallel/serial FMS interface cables is that FMS can't access them in any NT-type OS (Windows NT, 2000, XP), so, these interface options are disabled in FMS under XP.

The only two cable types working under XP are:
1) FMS specific PIC based cable, whose main advantage is that it provides as many proportional channels as your TX has (up to 8).
2) TX-to-Joystick cable. Disadvantage - only 4 proportional channels (no good for heli dudes); advantage - works with any Windows based sim, which supports joystick control. (I'm flying with such a joystick interface in Windows 2000).

Hope this helps,
Boris

airwethead 02-23-2002 11:09 PM

Thanks Boris

Yes, that does shed a little light on the subject, but I am still left in the dark about how to get/make an interface cable. Any info about either of these options would be greatly appreciated! :p

OK, I just went back and read the first post in this thread (DUH) and followed the link about the PIC cables. That should work.
Thanks everybody!

Hi airwethead,

Check out FMS home page and click "Forum" at
http://n.ethz.ch/student/mmoeller/fms/index_e.html
I built one of the parallel interface described under
Parallelport-PPM-Interface for my JR. With earlier versions
of FMS, the controls were jumpy as if there were lots of
noise coming from the line. But it works great with the newest
beta version of FMS. I'm on windows 98SE.
Good luck.

That's the one I built... Worked great... I bought the kit and soldered it together in my garage...I'm running Windows 2k
