Can anyone help me?? - I've just got my first gas engine, a G62. I've seen a load of stuff up here about how you should use a castor based oil for breaking the engine in and only then change over to a synthetic. So, being a good boy, I went out and tried to buy some castor based 2 stroke.. I ended up with Castrol Super TT but now have doubts as to whether this is wholly mineral based or if there is some synthetic..... has anyone use this to break in a Zenoah??? Is it any good - I'm in the UK and so many of the oils that I have seen discussed are difficult/impossible to find over here. (PS - I have also bought some Castrol TTS once the engine is broken in)
Help is much appreciated!!

Castor oil in model engines gives the 'tuning' a degree of lattitude if set up too lean...but this is generally only for the smaller 'glow' engines which operate at a lower temperature.
The other big difference in the oil quantity, or % in the fuel.
Glow engines take approx 20% oil as we all know, but petrol engines take a lot less. Also, the oil content required in petrol engines tends to vary between manufactures, due to internal design, and / or purpose.
I have an old 'chain-saw' converted engine which only needs 1-Part oil to 40 Part petrol, and does not seem fussy on different types. It has some lovely needle bearings on its con-ron.
Your Zenoah manual should advise on oil use, but you could use a little more to 'break it in'.
Its a popular engine maker, so you should get loads of advice from this column.
Just another thing....its interesting to note that petrol engines also have a considerably different air-fuel ratio!
...so the mixture is effectively leaner too!
Anyway, the Zenoah is a popular mfr. so you'l get loads of advice off this column.
Best of luck!

Understand that this is just 2 cents of an opinion..
It takes up to 10 gallons of gas to break in a g62...before you should go to synthetic oil....It will let you know when it's ready..
Any good two stroke natural oil for air cooled engines mixed at 32 to 1...
Nothing made for boat motors or anything for water cooled 2 stroke engines should be used..
If you have avability to Penzoil 2 stroke oil for 'air' cooled engines it is fine...Wally World is my supply for it...
The reason for this is to wear in the cylinder...
Their will be more black gunk come out of the exaust than you can shake a stick at....(don't worry it gets lighter as it goes on...)

Is this 10 gallons of gas using natural mineral oil then?

Define "natural" mineral oil...
Were kinda' in different worlds....
I noticed that you are in the Uk and I'm not familiar with your brands of oil..
It's the word mineral that's throwing me off...
If you're talking about natural oil, like being refined out of crude oil, yes...

Oil
AhH!
- but is not Crude oil - really old vegetable oil!?
(just recently refined, and it certainly is a different world if you n
knew how much us Brits paid for our GAS!)
Cheers!

Well - the old quizz was: animal, veg, or mineral.....
Anyway... Back to Japan? ......Zenoah g-62
.....is that 10 US gallons?
I'd fly most of that, and 10g would go far....
I don't have a Zenoah just yet, but I'm heading more towards Gas engines.
Cheers BB1

These gas bangers were originaly designed for weed wackers so were made for the average dumb joe to use in his garden. I have at last count 8 Zenoahs and have never had any trouble. I used to go to the local motor cycle shop and buy their best racing oil then I discovered Lawn Boy ashless 2 stroke grass mower oil and have used it ever since. For the first few tank fulls I increase the oil mix by about 1/4. It works for me. BTW Lawn Boy oil is very cheap and Clean.

Thanks to everyone for the advice - one of the problems in the UK is that we don't seem to have the variety of oils (and eveything else) that you have in the US. Then the next hardest thing is to find out what basis the oil is (castor, mineral etc). Resellers just don't seem to know. I have been reliably told that Castrol R30 is a castor based oil so that's what I'm going with until it's broken in and then I'll switch to Castrol TTS.
I'll let you all know how I get on ......

Zenoah puts out a oil they recommend. I use this at 32:1 then I switch to Amsoil 80:1.
BOTH are synthetic oils.

Love this thread, everyone here has good info and is funny to boot!
I've been to the U.K. recently, and for what you guys pay for gas...oops petrol... it is almost cheaper to fly glow! At first glance the prices look comparable, then you notice it is not a per gallon price, but a per liter price...Ouch. (I had expected imperial gallons instead of U.S. gallons, not metric at the pump)
By the way, mineral oil is a byproduct of the distilling process of gasoline from crude oil.

..... weedkiller oil is readily available in the US cos you've gotta climate that'll grow weeds and hence you own weedwhackers ...... in the UK we just flood our weeds from above hence a real scarcity of weedwhackers and their associated oil!! Hee hee hee.

Actually we ( Brits ) now have electric (garden) vacuums, hedge trimmers, and even chain-saws.
........good job we have 2-stroke motor-bikes & mopeds.
........And yes you boys are right: for us its a hard choice to convert to petrol / gas. Its really only practical on the larger engines, 20cc plus?
...its a long term thing!
cheers.
