I need some help mixing some diesel for an engine that I converted by putting a screw instead of a glowplug.
I saw many mixtures in this forum but I am not very good with ratios and haven't figurerd out how many ounces of the ingridients I need to make a quart of diesel. It would be very helpfull if some one can post this in ounces not in percent.
Another question is, how do I get the ether from a spray can of starting fluid for automoblies into a can? Do I just spay it in the can until in is all out?
Also for those with a davis diesel conversion.
How long is the screw used in the head(how much is sticking out in the inside of the cylinder when screwed all the way in?

You guys really make things hard for yourselves with your ounces and quarts...try metric instead
One litre is 1.05 quarts..near enough to being exactly the same. Whatever fuel you're going to mix then first you have to decide what % of each ingredient you want. So lets say you decided you want 22.5% castor, 27.5% ether, 48.5% kero and 1.5% amyl nitrate. Seems complicated? Well this is how it looks when mixed using metrics.
Castor..... 225cc
Ether...... 275cc
Kero....... 485cc
A/Nitrate.. 15cc
What could be easier than that?
But Joe...if I understand what you're trying to do then it won't work. A diesel engine is a bit more than just a long screw to alter the compression.

What doese cc stand for?
And what do you mean it is more than just a screw? I know you have to adjust the screw to a certain level, that is why I am asking for the lenth of the screw in the davis diesel heads.
I have seen the davis heads and they are just like the glow heads, I saw someone post it here somewhere but I couldn't find the post.
Do now how I can get the ether from a spray can into a nonspary can.
thanks for posting

A diesel conversion head is not just screw that is adjusted for length. The screw adjusts the position of the contra-piston below it which in turn varies the compression ratio (thereby changing the ignition timing) of the engine. I make these conversions for several engines (.15 to .46 size). If you would like to try one, let me know and I can send you one FREE to experiment.

cc means cubic centimetre (sometimes it's called a millilitre)...there's 1000 of them in a litre. Sometimes you'll see a .60 (cubic inch) engine called a 10cc.

rmteo1 if you can send me one for free that would be very helpfull.
I was going to buy one after I was able to turn on the engine I have with my own head. Another reason I haven't bought one if that I have no way of getting my hands on diesel fuel because my lhs doesen't have any(never even heard of a rc diesel engine) and I don't have a credit card to order it.
If you are sending me one I will need a .15 head. I will e-mail you about that.
thanks for all your replies.

Hi Joe,
When you say that you were able to turn on the engine, what do you mean?
Also, you need to have diesel fuel to run a converted engine. The heads that I have for .15 engines will fit the Leo, Mecoa and Megatech engines (like the one in the picture above) and another for the OS 15LA. There are slight dimensional differences with the 2 heads. What .15 engine do you have?

Joe78586,
Search RC Universe for Diesel Fuel and you will find many threads.
Try Eric Clutton's oily mix 931-455-2256. Works great in my Davis conversions and PAW purpose built diesels. Davis makes great 1/2a diesel fuel. Making your own is a lot of bother when there is such good premix.

Sorry for not posting fast but I am having trouble with my computer, it won't reboot and I have to post from a library.
I mean that after I got the engine with the screw on the head to turn on, I would buy a head. Just to make sure I can do it.
Here is what I am trying to do.
I have a .61 veco engine that I wan'ted to convert to diesel, but since you said you would give me a head I am going to buy an engine that will fit your head so I can convert it to a diesel.
After I converted the veco to a diesel and saw it work and I could handle it I was going to convert my T-maxx 2.5(rc/car) into a diesel.
Mabey the performance won't be as good as I expect it to be but I just want to try it out.
FrancisPerson, thanks but like I said I don't have a credit card to order some but I am going to see if the guy at my lhs can order it for me.
thanks again for posting

Wish I could get someone to give ME a diesel head!
Hey,.. does anyone know if Davis is making a head to fit The AP 09 Hornet yet?? Has He made any for the Norvell 049's or the 065's? I KNOW the Cox heads work great!.. and the ones for the Super Tigre 2000 Make one Monster of an Engine!

No good with cc's but You can use a standard or metric cooking/baking measuring cup to mix a qt(or Canadian Metric equivilent)...
ingredients
Metal Can
Kerosene (lamp oil/parraffin)
Quality Castor
Ether/starting fluid
1 roll teflon plumbers pipe-thread tape
Amyl-nitrate (ignition-improver)
Mix one cup kerosene with one cup Castor in metal can
add 2 capfulls Dr Diesels Amyl-nitrate into can
teflon plumbers tape threads on can
spray entire contents of starting fluid in can in well-ventilated area
(good idea to cover can opening around starting fluid nossleas much as possible)
Place lid on can tightly, shake well...
Serve to diesel at room-temperature through approved gas/diesel fuel line
always replace cap tightly
Bon-apitite" & happy flying
Bob
Now,..Before someone gets onto Me about My math, this doesn't make a full quart, but does the job nicely. The can is 12 oz,but spraying it out and losing ether in evaporation, and I never can seem to get the last couple oz out of the can,it makes for a mildly "hot" mix, which is great for smaller diesels.
PS: This is pretty standard for ALL size diesels regaurdless of cc or cu.in. some folks up the ether(starting fluid) just a bit for the smaller .55 to 1cc but only by an ounce or so......but you should be roughly 3/4 to 1 oz greater already with the above mix.

Eric Clutton (Dr.Diesel) sells amyl-nitrate for $9.00 a pint( and that makes a LOT of diesel fuel!
) You can go to his website http://www.cafes.net/doctordiesel/ Do not use ignition improvers for auto or truck diesels,as they may harm your engine! Use the cheapest starting fuild You can find,as they will not include the "expensive" harmful additives. You may also want to read the information on Eric's site to help You through questions You may have. He will also be more than willing to answer your questions via e-mail (he's a VERY nice fellow!) Hope this gets You on the right track!

I don't think it is dangerous... You should check. It is non-flammable I believe,it just "smooths-out " ignition of the ether. I really think You should ask and find out for sure. Ask Eric,he will tell You right-off if he can ship it or not....worth a try! Bob
