Default help with 2 speed adjustment

Hi everyone,

I recentlty got the 2 speed conversion for my bigfoot, i installed it with little problems.
When i was doing the maiden run on the new 2 speed i could not here it change gear or visibly notice the gear change, the run i was doing was quite long nearly the whole length of the football field.
My mate has the 2 speed and on his bigfoot and i can hear when his changes gear.Mine sounds like its gettin to full revs without changing gear.

My question is do both spur gears have to come off to get to the adjustment screw and by how much do i turn it by on each adjustment?.

If both spur gears have to come off each time it's gonna be a pain, why couldn't they just drill a small hole in the 2nd speed spur gear to get to it easier....or am thinking of doing it wrong? If so is there a better and easier way to adjust it?

Also the instructions are very poor with the 2speed,are there any links that describe in detail about the 2speed? if so plz plz post

thanx to all who reply.

You will have to turn the headless pins M6 x 6 out to have it shift sooner and in to have it shift later.

And yes without you drilling yourself you will have to unmount the spurgears to get to them. Give them 1/4 turn each at a time. The shiftpoint will not change later on, so it is preatty much a permanent setting.

Unless you change gearing offcause hehe.

...I'd suggest grabbing some ballhead allen keys, they should be able to get under the second spur to adjust the shift point...and yes, 1/4 turn at a time, you don't want to overcompensate, and it's easier to make one small change at a time and see the results come closer until you're happy than to make a large one and have to backtrack until it works...

Yes. Like rcmobile suggests. ballhead allen keys should do the trick. I have them, but the ball end must be worn somewhat, because they slipped all the time making it easier to remove the spur.

I'll ask my friend how he ajusts his. I do not have the 2-speed myself, but installed it on his.

Guys,

I to have installed the two speed on my Big Foot and let the M6 screw right out and can only get the shift point with wheels lifted off deck.

Any advice?

Part no
07450, 2-Speed gear box 1:5, 1pce
07451, 2-Speed gear box 1:6/Beetle/Marder/Truck

Roughly $200 (when converted from 160E)

Looks like stick out a bit (won't fit in Leopard) :-(

only issue on the leopard is the pipe, we have had consumers who massaged the pipe enough to fit the two speed.

Locic and common sense prevails again.

Well I guess I was just lucky and or over-anylitical as usual. The second gear engagement is based on centrifugal force on the small steel hammer inside of the second gear wheel. If you consider this you can get pretty close. I backed the screw out until the screw head was flush with the actuator maybe a half turn beyond flush and mine is perfect. (it shifts at the top of the powerband and stands up if you are not carefull I blame the new Oneil pipe; the one that just came back from Jet-pro on monday. You can definitley tell when it shifts by sound and feel. The stock two speed comes with 18/46(1st) and 20/44(2nd) or a 2.5:1(1st) and 2.2:1(2nd) which I thought seemd to close to be of any real benefit(especially when the stock gearing is 18/46 or 3:1 so I used the stock gear wheels for first and the 20/44 for second so I now have a 3:1 first gear and a 2.2:1 second gear. This gearing seems perfect (at least with a tuned pipe)

Please be aware the stock plastic gears must be modified to fit on the two speed. The plastic hub/dampers must be removed and the center hole of the spur gear must be enlarged to fit over the first gear carrier, the same could be done for second gear if you had gear set laying around. the pinions need no modification however the correct pinion must be used.
Possiblities:
16/48 3:1
18/46 2.5:1
20/44 2.2:1
21/42 2:1
22/42 1.9:1
23/40 1.74:1
24/40 1.66:1
25/40 1.6:1
26/38 1.46:1

The hardest part about the two-speed is the #$%&@ rear brake.

In my opinion the two-speed was the second beat upgrade to my MT.

hi all,

1)monster40,
there are two bolts on the 2 speed, the 1st holds the adjustment thingy on the layshaft and the 2nd one adjusts the shift point.u may be turning the wrong one m8

2)daytona7,
the 2 speed cost me £114 delivered that is about $208.91 usd

3)chowderhead72,
that is one of the best replies i have read to date, nice explanation of gear ratio's, i'm gonna copy and paste an keep it for reference,NICE ONE M8. [8D]..because i was wondering mainly about 1st gear my bigfoot came with 16/48 setup and i noticed that the 2speed came with 18/46
would u advise me going back to 16/48 for 1st gear or leave it the way it is?

by the way there doesn't seem to be enough space between spur and adjuster to get a ballend allen key in?
P.S.. Are u supposed to hear it change gear?or just notice the speed change?

Thanks for the kind words.

I would strongly recomend the 48/16. I did not see a way to adjust the shift screw other than removing both spurs. Once you get it set I would suggest a big glop of BLUE loctite on the center bolt. If compared to real vehicles and or drag racing : the 48/16 combo would be like a 4.11 axle and the 46/18 would be close to a 3.42 based on the difference of 16.666 difference in ratios. In the vehicle world that is a huge difference. In the real world the (GM) axle ratios are 3.08, 3.42, 3.55 ,3.73, 4.11, 4.88,......

If you have a tuned pipe you WILL hear it as for the stock pipe I would think so but I am not sure.

Darn it. With the price of all the new goodies and upgrades, I better start looking for a job to help supplement my pension so I have more money to spend before I die.

Good luck Biggie.

I am going to a 48/16 1st and a 42/21 2nd as soon as I get my axle cup situation under control and some elcon lower rears.
That will give me a 3:1 1st and a 2:1 2ndI hope the pipe can pull it.

I just ordered steel pinions in 16t and 22t as well as a 42t spur, now i have the option of 3:1, 2.5:1, 2.2:1, and 1.9:1. I hope this thing will pull the 1.9:1 with the oneill pipe and velocity filter/intake if it will I should be close to 70mph if not it's time for the oneill 29cc! I am glad I installed the KP mk3 brakes. Ye haw!

I was wondering if you guys had worked out what ratio is best. I was thinking a 3:1 and a 2:1, but don't want to buy the gears if there are others that work better. I have a Std 26, with FG pipe. My 2 speed arrives in a couple of days hopefully. Do the 2 speeds come with alloy or plastic pinions?

3:1-2:1 works well on the truck offroad. Keep an eye on the shift pin durring maintanence. Set your shift point late or you will bog. What pipe are you using? Type of pipe will make a big difference. With a samba you will want to shift late O'neill shift early FG shift very late so it can have a fighting chance once it hits second.

Does the 2 speed give you any noticeable advantage over a single speed?

Cooz - I wanted the extra speed and in fact I find that my 2 FG's with 2 speeds are more enjoyable to run (smoother power). I'd say the 2 speed was the best $ I have spent on upgrades besides the pipe.
