RE: Name - Marder
A marder in the true sense of the word is a kind of stoat/weasel/ferret thing. Supposedly, more than a little aggressive. It seems either that FG have, as mentioned, a tank fetish, or perhaps an animal-loving side. Marder, Leopard,... Beetle (hehe). S'probably the tank connection though.

RE: Name - Marder
Ya call that a tank?!? Where's the canon?
I'm thinking of starting a new RC car company and calling my car the M1A2. It will use forged depleted uranium suspension parts (no sissy Elcon-like 7076 T6 alloy here). You'll have to wear a radiation suit to perform repairs on it but I bet you won't break any parts! It will also be 'armor piercing' to obstacle it runs into.
I just have to convine the US DoD to hand over a few tons of depleted uranium material to get the factory line started.

Cool idea, but what about the unsprung weight. Uranium is not exactly known for its weight saving capabilities. But maybe you'll get a glow-in-the-dark effect in return.[8D]

RE: Name - Marder
BTW - I just had my idea for depleted uranium suspension parts deflated. Apparently that stuff is like lead in consistency. When the Abrams or the A-10 Warthog fire this type of ammo the kinetic energy of the slug causes it to splatter (very hard) on the surface of it's target. The energy transfer causes material from the target to break loose and fly around. Imagine being inside a tank when a shell like this comes at you. When it hits, your own metal on the inside of your tanks fly at and around you.
Very disgusting in practice (not the warring type exactly) but the physics of it is really interesting.

Ah that's nothing! There's a sabot tank shell that pierces the hull of another tank and fills it with superheated plasma, liquefying the occupants[:'(]
Uranium is actually softer than lead and thus is actually heavier so gives better kinetic properties. That's why the military use it.
So the Marder Tank was named from the nasty European Marder weasle beasty & the FG Marder was named after either of them
