Rubber shielded bearings - required?
I was wondering if people who has run their offroad 1/6 over treacherous conditions (sand, mud, etc.) have noticed if the stock metal shielded bearings were good enough to withstand the torture of the elements?
I have yet put my Bigfoot in those conditions but I was a little reluctant under sandy conditions, the fine sandy particles will seize up the bearings or something else that moves/pivots.
I do recall having to throw away 2 metal-shielded bearings with my 1/8 nitro Inferno after running on sand and replacing the whole bearings on the buggy with rubber shielded type. It was the metal shielded type where there is no c-clip to remove and the sand particles that got stuck just didn't want to go out.
Your comments & opinions?

RE: Rubber shielded bearings - required?
I spray mine out before I refill my tank..so they get around 1 hour use then I carb cleaner them and wd40 them and I'm off again...really a grease won't help it'd just make the sand stick more...I've seen the rubber shielded ones for sale at some local stores...lowe's...home depot but haven't measured to see if they'll fit...I'm sure they are about the same...these rc's don't have specific bearings for them...I've never found a nitro too so doubt a larger gaser does...but sand hasn't bugged my bearings at all...it chewed my spur/pinion off fast though but mine are stock plastic also....Also be sure your air filter is really good...sand will pop a engine fast..I learned it the hard way...I run duratrax filters now with a outerwears sock...I saw you got the teamgonads outer filter So you'll be set

Deffinately go with the "2RS" type bearings, these are the rubber shielded ones.
The metal shielded are typed as "Z" they are exactly the same except for the shield being metal and are as durable as the 2RS ones but that is until thet meet sand and water.
2RS bearings are more expensive but worth to pay for and require only little maintanance.

i do nothing with mine, had metal sheilded one now slowly replacing them with the rubber type,
they last a good few months with the mub and sand i run on, they are so cheap here its not really worth the effort to service them just chuck away and replace

What are the sizes of these bearings?
I found some skateboard bearings #608 2rs abec 8 ID 8mm OD 22mm width 7mm
24 for $10.00
Are these the ones we need?

ABEC # 9 is the tolerance of the bearings - nothing to do with the dirty conditions - see the comments on the rubber seals - check the ultra seals offered by Boca Bearings www.bocabearings.com

IMO I would just use [link=http://cgi.ebay.com/100-Skate-Wheel-Bearings-8x22x7-mm-Wholesale-Lot-8x22_W0QQitemZ7548885910QQcategoryZ25284QQtcZphoto QQcmdZViewItem]these[/link] ... Cheap enough to just throw away once they are worn out. Just pop in another set and go.

Where are you guys finding your bearings? I found some wheel bearings on Ebay, but where are you getting the rubber sealed bearings for the clutch and layshaft?

There are several bearing suppliers right in the yellow pages near every area. They will have what you are looking for.

I checked already, they wanted over $30.00 for one bearing. I found the 10x19x7 rubber shielded for $1.19 each and the 10x22x6 rubber shielded for $2.69 each. But the shipping and handling is going to be more than the bearings cost.

You shouldn't need to look for shops that far. There should be a bearing supplier less than 30 mins drive (unless you live in the middle of nowhere ).
There is another specialist RC bearing supplier which have existed since early 90s (or perhaps earlier) - Boca Bearings. Google them and they have all sorts of shields, types of bearings you can ever imagine.
