RE: Eletric Baja B5
8HP out of a more or less standard 30.5 engine.
[:-]
That is awfull much, be happy when you get 5HP with that kit when you have a decent pipe on.
But is it fun without noise?
Besides I would miss the smell of 2-stroke [sm=biggrin.gif]
[/quote]
Gotta have the two stroke noise, and castor oil smell.
Your right on the standard 30.5cc engine, about 5 with a pipe (if the pipe is good). But I was refering to a after market reed case made by Trevor Simpson, that you can use these cranks, and top ends on (there is a four bolt reed case for the Zen PUH cylinder also). That 8hp also included running alky, and going higher on the compression, plus reed porting (which uses a fifth transfer up the back of the cylinder, in addition to other ports being worked on). I don't have my dyno running yet, but over 7hp with smaller top ends have been measured by another competent engine builder. I think 8hp is a realistic high point right now. We may or may not have hit it, but I think it is a realistic goal that will be hit, if it has not been yet. Controling the buggy off road with over 6hp would probably be quite a hand full---so this all might be a mute point.

RE: Eletric Baja B5
At first I mocked the idea for an electric baja. Now, I am so sick of the theorizing about it, I DARE someone to do it. I bet you can't.
There is not one electric NERD out there with fuzz on his man purse that can do it. [sm=spinnyeyes.gif]
Seriously, can someone just do it, pleeeeeaaaase!!!

RE: Eletric Baja B5
hi
if i may just speculate for a second. imagine a plettenberg bolido (5000 watts, 740 g, ca. 500$, around 800 rpm/v), a schulze 40160 (160A continous, 40 cells at 1.2V, ca 650$) and 8x maxamp 12000mAh batteries at 7.4V (ca 1300$, 4360g) connected as 4 seriell and 2 parallell (29.6V, 24Ah). plus charger etc etc... maybe a second set of batteries...
so the equipement weights somewhat more than 5kg. how much weights the zenoah with tank?
i think such a setup could produce extreme performance and runtimes around 30min.
by the way... i like the smell and noise of my gassers. but i like electrics too. everthing has its place in this hobby. its all just for fun.
bye

This is almost to funny!

You guys are killing me, I kid you not, you couldn't make this up.
Is there anyone that can actually do this? Is there anyone that want's to do this? I can't believe that I had the second post that said " it takes gas and hauls *****" Now, I can't wait to see someone actually do this and post a vid![sm=confused_smile.gif]

RE: Eletric Baja B5
Hi Guys,
There was a post on here sometime back, that was about using a electric motor in an off roader, not a BAJA, but it could be done. A friend of mine put a plettenburg motor in a marder.... It was the fastest thing on the day, just didnt have enough batteries to last the day.

Just let me say I'm not a fan of electrics,as someone here has said ''batteries are for flashlights'' but check this out http://www.yourdailymedia.com/media/...ric_Sports_Car

RE: Eletric Baja B5
I've actually been thinking about this since I saw the RC Car Action article of Fine Design converting the LST to electric.
In the magazine article, I think they claim the brushless motor is 3hp, which is what HPI claims for the Baja, so I thought it was feasable, although not practical.
Most of the points here are valid. It is entirely possible to do, and could be overdone and easily beat the gas baja, but the cost would of course be insane, and there is the issue of runtime, and the rush we get from the sound and smell and realism of gas engines.
I'd love to do it, but I can think of many other things to do with 2 grand.
Anyway, I'm sure someone like Fine Design or MonsterRC will beat us to it. That's what I'm waiting for, so I can just read about it in the magazines.
Maybe we should all write to them suggesting it, and asking when they're going to do it.

Gys look at whats going on with people converting 1/8th vechiles to electric, there faster then the nitro versions. If we could find a motor (or motors that have the power we could get batteries to keep it running for a long long time.

I would assume that most people doing that to nitros are doing it because nitros are so finicky. Gas isn't like a nitro, but I think someone should try I don't think that it's something that will take off in your class.

RE: Eletric Baja B5
I wasnt talking about why people do it. I was talking about how people do it to 1/8th cars and they are faster then there nitro versions, so im aure you could pull the same thing off with a Gas R/C, and have it be faster then it was before

RE: Eletric Baja B5
Who would buy a 1/5th for alil over a grand, than spend the same amount on making it electric??[sm=confused_smile.gif]For the price it would be to convert gas cars to electric, you could buy a race onroad or offraod car with the upgrades, hydrolics brakes, and more. I always been a gas/nitro fan and I wouldnt mind an electric car to play with indoors on rainy days, but electrics have no realism to the sport, just a silent rc car going by and its much like a rc for kidz. Just my opinion though, nothin to take to the heart.
I guess its like the saying goes. "different strokes for different folks"

Sorry, I didn't mean in your class, I meant in our class. There is no doubt that you could make a faster or more higher hp car with electric. But this is not a reality right now. Not the run times or easeabililty.

It can be done and performance would be great, give it a couple more years and run time will get higher and the prices will hopefully get lower
But when you really think about driving an electric Baja. . . . . . It would be like watching TV with the sound off

You could do it to a MCD, then at least you wouldn't be paying for an engine you (probably) wouldn't use... I bet one of them Hummer's could handle a lot of power! Is anyone actually going to do this then? It sounds as though it wouldn't be that expensive by large scale standards!

Harm,i think it is, makes an electric, but i think its an onroad. pretty costly but seems like a solid unit. end price is probably close for doing and electric baja. you could instead of buying a new unit. buy just he parts for the rolling chassis, and then add your own motor, esc, and battery system... or start out with a used one off the bay. but i prefer the gas personally.

Like Timmahh said, you could buy the parts and build that way. You can get a Firehammer or baja frame and all the parts on tower. But like pilotjohn said, it would be like watching tv with the sound off
You know, since we are all saying that anything would have low run time but tons of power, why not make a dragster. Make a rail or funny car that can hit 120mph or more!

Hey jpachill1,check this out.I work with M.K.'s brother. He made some sweet funny cars and top fuel rails all gassers.Don't think he makes them anymore. He does alot of engine work for joe amato and shirley mudowney now.I've seen some of his cars up close and running and all I can say is[sm=thumbup.gif]sweet http://cgi.ebay.com/1-4-Scale-Funny-Car-M-K-Pacesetter_W0QQitemZ230029167161QQihZ013QQcategory Z19168QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item230029167161ee t!!
