Default Is 1/5th scale right for me?

I have been throwing around the idea of getting a 1/5th scale buggy or truck but not sure that its a good investment for me. I am looking at either the HPI Baja 5b or the Redcat. I dont drive a ton (maybe once a week) but when I do I am really hard on them and pretty much break everytime I drive (that is why I only do it once a week ) I have had a few nitro stadium trucks and now a 1/10 scale redcat buggy and a T-Maxx. When I do drive its normally trashing around construction sites WOT everywhere and launching off anything I can find, sometimes high speed runs down the street and up curbs and stuff. I wouldnt want to toss $1k into a 1/5th and either be dissapointed by the performance (out of the box) or end up breaking expensive parts everytime I run it when I could stick with a T-Maxx and find parts easier and cheaper. Which would be better suited to my driving?

in my opinion, you jump the baja, you break the baja. 22+ pounds is tricky to land and not end up needing fixing. i say stick to the 1/8 scale and jump all day

Default RE: Is 1/5th scale right for me?

that was histerical frumpy!!!! so 5th scale isnt for every one. the only people its not for, is people that havent tried it. i was into nitro's big time for many many years. cant believe that i wasted soo much money on it. as far as parts go. if you look at it in in whole, it is cheaper. check out stock parts for an hpi 5b campared to your t-max.. there about the same. $5-$15 average. jumping a large scale takes a little practice, but once you get it, its like riding a bike.. very easy. its simply a diffrent throttle aproach then with the nitro's. if your a basher, then youl love the 45minute run times. AND NO TUNING!!!. how many times has your nitro been a snot to start? that doesnt happen with the 2 strokes. 3 pulls and your shoot'in 15 foot roosters!! even after a motor has many gallons on it.. they really last along time(motors). and ya. they way about 23 pounds, but there also 2 inches shy of 3 feet long!! so when it hits something its gana hurt. but check out those vids. they speak for themself. the 5b is one tuff rig. unlike purchasing a used nitro, for some reason buying a used fifth scale is alot safer. i think its mainly do to the motors, and most of them are adult owned. check them out. mines in the market place right now. bottom line is, there is nothing like driving a fifth scale. nothing like it at all. this is probly as close as you can get to the real thing.

Which would be better suited to my driving?
if you aren't budget minded then grab a gaser...if you are then stay away.....they are like every other rc they need some cash tossed at them here and there....as far as jumping them around all day the hpi baja can handle it as much as a tmaxx can...tmaxx is pretty prone to breakage unless really beefed up so you're used to changing parts on it.....you won't break near as much on a baja....if you're doing backflips and 25' jumps constantly it's cheaper to own a savage or revo they hold up 1000 times better than the tmaxx....the baja won't fair well at backflips since it's almost impossible to control in the air and it won't take 25' jumps for long on hard pack surfaces without some hopups....don't agree with the tuning thing since a well tuned nitro doesn't need tweaks constantly as most people assume...its the improperly tuned nitro needs tweaks constantly...gaser definetly wins in awe factor, power, torque and run time and engine durability

I had just what you say happen to me I used to be verry agresive with my nitro off roads all though they wouldent brake every time I ran them. After I got my FG monster I realised Its a lot more fragile that the tmaxx and savage. If you jump them you have to land them on all 4r's. you have to be carfull not to have the car tumble or cartwheel on its tires. but I really like to run a large scale more that the 10th. you feel your moving more weight the second you start runing it for the same time.

and you do have to upgrade the cars for more power they all are really slugish specialy of the line both the baja and the redcat bog off the line (stock)

That is kind of what I was afraid of, I was also looking at the Firehammer MT and watching videos on the net and it seems like smaller jumps and ripping around is fine but they dont handle huge jumps well. I do good for a little while just ripping around and hitting small jumps but after a while I get bored and try jumping over cars or across driveways and I think if I sunk $1000 into a 1/5 scale and the next week cartwheeled it for 75' breaking a bunch of parts I would be dissapointed....maybe Ill try and get one and keep my Maxx for bashing.

to be honest most poeple here do not really abuse their 1/5th scale cars. They might say they do but its not true. I know the kind of bashing your talking about.

"your in the middle of a construction site, see a big sand pile and you dont mesure or nothing you just drive your truck as far as possible turn around and hit the sand pile at full speed, ohh no run the truck is upside down its going to shut off, you flip it back on its wheels and go for the jump again."

You really cant do this with a big 30 pound car, it will distroy its self.

Now if you can take it easy you will be rewarded with a largescale car that you will really enjoy but again you will have to hop it up a bit, trust me you will be verry disapointed with the sluggish acceleration these car bring stock.

Does any one have a video of a stock Baja?
also a video of hard bashing?

the baja and the firehammer are not even in the same class. the baja jumps very well. the firehammer is ok. the main reason u will be putting xtra money in a baja is all the cool new parts that come out. if u already have an fm or dsm radio get the ss. if u wont to see some BIG AIR check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75vqYIWLBXk

yamanube, you sound a lot like me when it comes top your driving habits.

I beat the hell out of my FS and have a lot of fun doing it.
Has anyone mentioned the downside to this at this scale??

It can get expensive!! Especially for a driver like myself (and for you it would seem).

You can definitely beat these things, you will just need spare parts on hand, and a wallet that can handle ordering replacement parts.
My bash sessions very rarely end with my rig running the way it did when we arrived. I will bend, strip, break or in some other way disable my truck. I love the tear downs and rebuilds. I love trying to find a way to make something more reliable.
Eventually you will bulletproof certain areas and realize, just like with a nitro, what to leave for the weak link.

If that sounds like something you might be into and can spare the extra cash, go for it.

The HPI Baja does not jump well. It jumps better than most large scales though. There's a real technique to jumping the big boys, as I have discovered recently.

PAPE, stock baja, hard bashing? You got it.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KYlOMn-hF8

The guys on them videos are verry lucky. I wouldent even think of driving my FG that hard, mine always brakes some thing and to be honest I have about 15 tanks on my FG. only 3 of those were run empty, the others all stope early because of a faliure.
